  1. Re: My new very thick unknown mandolin -what is it?

It's very possibly Mexican. Take a look at this one and this one. The OP's does appear to be a little more refined.
  2. Re: What Mandolin Did I Get From the Thriftstore?

Agreed. If the OP can do the work himself he'll probably have a playable bowlback mandolin, assuming there are not any underlying issues we can't see, but I still wouldn't put $240.00 into it. That's...

    Re: Engraved Truss Rod Cover

And, many of the old instruments shown in the coffee table books have pearl truss rod covers and many are engraved. It's not something that just happened, it's been around for many decades. Page 129...

    Re: Robson A style tuners

That's why. A US search doesn't search the UK but the link will take us there. They make really nice tuners.
  5. Re: What Mandolin Did I Get From the Thriftstore?

This is a list of recently sold Suzuki mandolins on eBay. Except for one outlier that I'd love to know the story on, none of them even approach $240.00 and these are labeled.

And then you could buy these:

Re: What has your mandolin been called?

Well Len, it's simple. When a customer walks into a bank with a violin case people are generally afraid that he has a machine gun in it and will take it out and rob the place. When a customer walks...

    Re: Engraved Truss Rod Cover

It's not a stupid question. I tend to want to make my mandolins (and guitars) that are supposed to look like vintage instruments look like vintage instruments. Henry Phillips developed the Phillips...

    Re: Engraved Truss Rod Cover

I get the gist, it looks good!
  12. Re: Broken bearing block on tuning machine - can I glue/solder it

You might be able to peen it if there's still enough metal there, I'm going to hazard a guess that it probably let go when it was dropped. It still won't be a decent tuner and wont add anything to...
  13. Re: Seeking information on great-grandfather's mandolin

Unfortunately very few bowlbacks are valuable. The ones that are were built by known builders and are most often labeled. They generally are more valuable as family heirlooms than monetarily.

    We...

It's not that nobody is interested but without pictures people are guessing at what you have. Just post some pictures and the members will surely have something to say.

    Phil, how about a picture?
  16. Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

Recording Kings were indeed made by most of the Chicago builders as well as Gibson. I would assume that Gibson made the least of them.

One of the more famous instruments was John Fahey's...
  17. Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

We've had a few over the years. You kind of have to dig through the pictures to find the Gibson built models. Pretty much followed the Kalamazoo models.

Re: Repair person in Phoenix area?

If you don't get an answer you might call Dennis Vance at The Mandolin Store and ask him for a name.

  19. Re: PBS documentary on the history of Bluegrass

I think the Ken Burns documentary on country music airs on September 15th

And somebody already posted that and I missed it. I'm looking forward to it.
  20. Re: what size flathead screw for a 1920 F2 pickguard clamp

No apology needed, you found the product and that's what I needed. Thanks.
  21. Re: Broken bearing block on tuning machine - can I glue/solder it

Look on the bottom of each of the Stewmac tuner pages. You'll see a drawing with the dimensions on them.
  22. Re: Broken bearing block on tuning machine - can I glue/solder it

OK, if it was me I'd just replace the entire set. A standard set of Grover, Gotoh, Rubners, Waverly, just about any manufacturers A style worm over tuners will work. The spacing should be .906 in or...
  23. Re: Broken bearing block on tuning machine - can I glue/solder it

Heat will probably destroy the button. I'd be real surprised if epoxy held it. Post a picture of the rest of the tuner. Somebody might have one.
  24. Re: what size flathead screw for a 1920 F2 pickguard clamp

OK, that might be why it isn't on the website.
  25. Re: what size flathead screw for a 1920 F2 pickguard clamp

OK, I'll give them a call, thanks.
