  1. I keep studying mandolin with guitar: Following the clouds)

I continue to study mandolin with guitar and it is my new composition - maybe it will be interesting for someone!)
As always, I give the timecode - the mandolin line starts at 1.35 (If someone is...
  2. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

Hey everyone, this is likely the last update. I went ahead with fitting the bridge myself.

I spent a couple hours sanding, checking, and repeating. The result: a night and day difference in the...

    Re: Reasons to avoid practicing

I am hard-wired for oppositional behavior whenever faced with the word "practice". Like when I was 8 years old and my mother (bless her) would tell me, "I'd better hear you practicing that piano for...
  4. 'Good Vibrations' for 7 mandolins and 3 mandocellos

I haven't decided how well this video works, but it was inspired by a phenomenal piece of artistry. I remember hearing the original work while I was on my knees, scrubbing floors in Orwell, Ohio...
  5. Re: Looking at your hands while playing -- opinions?

I never look at my hands, either of them. I happen to be totally blind, not one who is trying some new technique. Even so, I find it quite pleasant and rather liberating.

    Back when I started...

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

I agree, it is A mixolydian, which has the same key signature as D major. I have great trouble identifying a mode by hearing it. Especially mixolydian, which I get wrong all the time. But certainly,...

So interesting - thank you so much for your response! There appear to be some pieces of early plastic under the nut, but not sure if they're indicative of string placement or just jammed under there...

It's completely removable. Right, the foot slides into the piece attached to the tailpiece cover. The piece is glued with Pattex Xtreme and the glue is painted with silver marker. These pics will...

Once upon a time, there was a band called Tin Can Alley. And I was in it. It was my first real band. Fiddle, mandolin, guitar. Added a bass soon enough. Eventually pedal steel and a female singer,...
  18. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

Since I seldom get rid of any instruments, I consider most of what I own "keepers." However, I recently traded in my '54 F-5 on a rare long-neck Stelling banjo (sorry, folks!), so I'd define...

    1959 Sorkin/Stradolin Catalogue Pages

This shows the mandolin range in the 1959 Sorkin catalogue- we see a couple of Blue Comet mandolins as well. Not a perfect spread I am afraid but it helps fix an era for some Stradolin types.
