Re: Useful Tip For Changing Strings

I will have to try this wind-around-the-post method. I came here now to look for string change advice because I had such a devil of a time changing my strings last night. I used the capo method......

Re: When to Play the E on the A String?

I like to play it there because you can hit the open E at the same time and double. It sounds especially nice when you slide into the A-string E and do that.

Re: Northfield F5S On the Way

If it is really the case that all the Collings needed was some additional setup work, then this is a case of above and beyond customer service from the Vendor. I infer from your fist post that the...

Re: How to play chords to sing along to?

If you are new to chords, an easier to place to start than chop chords are simple 2-finger chords (especially if you are singing along). I would guess that we all use these in various aspects of...

Re: Need Advice on Selling/Upgrading Mandolin

It sounds as though you actually like the breedlove sound. I would consider putting the money into the fretwork - you may find that it is much better to play after you do that and you may be happier...
  13. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

I went to Wintergrass last weekend - lots of fantastic musicians. There is a band called Appalachian Roadshow who I'd never heard before - all very strong musicians - and probably one of the best...

    Re: Missing the bluegrass sound

All of the above - sadly there are no shortcuts.

Learn a bunch fiddle tunes (and make sure you can play them clearly before you play them fast)
    Develop your rhythm playing
    Practice making up...

    Re: Pickup or microphone?

We have used both. Our band is the "acoustical group that just wants to amplify a bit above the crowd noise" category. I prefer using a mic - I have an SM57 that plugs directly into our PA system....

Re: Help with Big Muddy Action/Bridge height

Thanks pops. I checked fretting 1 and 12 together again, and taking a closer look it is as you describe - some space but very little. Big Muddy specs "Medium Light" strings - 11-16-24-38. ...
