Re: Another source for Backup Tracks

I just tell my wife I found a coupon for it. That seems to be universal language for women.

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

I had both models when I started playing. I regard the KM-150 as a good beginner mandolin, and the MD305 as student level instrument. I noticed significant improvement in tone, neck action, and...

    Re: Wireless in-ear monitors

I thought the original Galaxy's were on the VHF band, which is prone to interference and drop outs. There are now some issues with UHF and cross talk from both new digital television frequencies and...

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

Mapes standard phospher bronze on the mandolin, D'Addarios on the octave.

    Re: Pickup or microphone?

Since you're on a budget, you might have luck finding a Shure SM81 for under $100. If you go the pickup route, you can find a JJB piezo for $40.

    Re: electric hum

Dirty pots on the guitar. Once you start fiddling with them, the dirt/corrosion clears off and the noise disappears. Still a good idea to disassemble and clean.

    Re: Compressor?

I think it's important to remember that electric guitarists typically use a compressor to get greater sustain, which is counter to how most mandolins are played. A compressor will shave off the top...

    Re: Andrew Marlin Session Player

Argh! You guys are correct. I originally spotted it in this video, which I assume is the same session, and didn't realize he had switched. Good catch.

Re: Any new pedals for multi-instrumentalists?

Except for the 7 band EQ, I think you'd be happy with a Tonedexter. I switch between a mandolin and an octave, but don't need any EQ changes from the board. The unit does have bass and high, plus a...

I recently took the plunge into the world of octaves and ended up getting a Pono. Essentially, I wanted an instrument that would sound full while accompanying myself or another vocalist, without...

    Andrew Marlin Session Player

Ran across a few videos of Andrew sitting in on a session with his Loar. He gets to stretch out a bit from his usual style.

    Re: Who?

My singing has been compared to Kris Kristopherson, and was intended as a compliment; but I can't get it out of my head how Kristopherson describes his own voice: "I sound like a frog."

Re: eastman md515 vs loar lh600

That's the question: Is the finish on the 515 varnish or nitro? I really like the varnish finish and the sound it releases.

    Re: Chord drones?

I ran across these a few years back. https://www.worshiptutorials.com/product/pads/ I don't know of anyone who uses them, but it's an intriguing idea for a solo artist, and should do the trick.

  16. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

As a matter of fact...there is a still of her towards the end of the final episode.

    You must be psycho.
  17. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I thought one of the themes throughout the series was the cyclical nature of country evolving/morphing/blending with other genres, then eventually getting back to it's roots. If the series has any...
  18. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

OK. I just got caught up with binge watching Monday and Tuesday. The series could end with Episode 7 and it would be complete for me.
  19. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I got turned off to country when I was a teen in the late '60's, and now I understand why - I was listening to the Nashville Sound. My interest resumed in the early '80's, but now I was focused on...
  20. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Agreed. There is an interview out there of how he came into possession of Clarence White's B Bender Tele that kind of gives away his overall knowledge of the music.

I'm curious about the varnish finish they're offering on the 5 series. Has anybody tried one of those? Impressions?
  22. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

So far this series is a 10 out of 10 for me. I'm learning so much about the various artists, their styles, and where they fit in with the history of our music.

    Re: Cords on the ground

Don't run your XLR and power cables together. Better to have them cross at an angle to prevent potential noise.

    Marty Stuart Mandolin Solo

Anybody happen to catch Marty Stuart's rendition of Orange Blossum Special last night? I knew he had guitar chops, didn't realize he is in top form on the mandolin.
