Re: What strings for 10 string Bandolim?

    I would use .010, .015, .022w, .034, .048. One of my 10s likes a .011, another likes .009. My Buchanan’s scale length is 14.25”, or 360mm, and I believe the Brazilian 10s are similar, perhaps only...

None of the above has enough strings.

I also screwed up the other one:

    3-0-0
    5-2-1
    7-3-3
    9-5-5
    7-3-3
    5-2-1
0-3-3<---- This one should be 3-0-0 as above.

    Re: Interesting video

I like the intervening “bumper” that is the notorious “lick”.

I hear there is a T-shirt that says “Voice Leading > Theory”. Because we have fewer notes we can use at one time we have to mainly...

Keith Jarrett --- Tom Wright Quartet

This is a Keith Jarrett tune from the 70s, -- 'Long As You Know You're Living Yours -- internet hates beginning a name with an apostrophe. Again the Tom Wright Quartet live at the Epicure Cafe.

Live Jazz -- Tom Wright Quartet

This was the opening number when we played at the Epicure Cafe, Fairfax, VA. "Pontapé" is by Jovino Santos Neto, who played it at Centrum this spring for the choro workshop. The name translates as...

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

If the metal case is ferrous, i.e. steel, you’re out of luck. I have one made that way, potted properly but any tap on the case is really loud. Gibson and similar are chrome-plated brass housings, so...
  11. Re: Micing my Farmers Market/Retirement Home Bluegrass band

The Shure 57 and 58 mics are fussy about distance and angle, as you know. An omnidirectional dynamic mic will be forgiving but not as much sound above feedback. Then again, you may not need much...
  12. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

What is wrong with sounding like a guitar? May I point out it is the post popular sound out there? Could there be a reason?

Actually, no emando will sound exactly like a guitar except for a few...
  13. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

I felt a need to have spares, so I have three acoustic 10-strings and two electric 10-strings. (Nothing with only 8 strings.)

    Re: Beware EVOs

I have EVO .080” width on four instruments. No complaints, and I see close to zero wear after couple of years’ hard playing on my main acoustic axe.

Re: I play a little guitar...

I am moving toward calling my 10-string an alto guitar. I covers the tenor range but goes higher, with a lighter tone in general. And means they won’t expect to hear either O Sole Mio or Rawhide.

  16. Re: Question for notation-reading CGDAE-instrument players

Use the extra ledger lines (A). No one wants to see alto clef and 8va is confusing for me, although I’m getting better at it. Useful to practice bass clef, but the main reason to avoid the extra...
  17. Re: Need an Amp for my solid-body four-string electric mandolin

You don’t have more highs than an electric guitar, but you do have less low end, so a small cab is fine. (I like 6.5” woofers.)

I played through a Quilter and was really impressed. It was a...

    Re: Wayne Shorter on 10-string

Thanks, all. Two years in the jazz workshop have introduced me to much of the canon, and to further tunes from some players I knew of but knew little of their music. Mainly, though, it has been a...
  19. Re: Strange intonation issue with new strings

It would be a vendor mistake, but I (at least once) have had a packaged set with mismatched gauges in a pair. A micrometer would be handy, or by feel check if the flat one has less tension.

Re: Kluson split-shaft tuners for mandolin

Very cool. I loved split shafts on my first Fender guitar, although not necessarily the Kluson gears. Bass guitars have them, but I think they lost some popularity by being fragile in the small...
  22. Re: Single coil magnetic 'strat' pickup problem uneven amplificat

True, contact not necessary, it’s magnetic fields, not electric current, and the pole piece itself is a magnet.

Another approach is to just add an appropriate small piece of ferrous metal on top...
  23. Re: Single coil magnetic 'strat' pickup problem uneven amplificat

We usually find some tilt, raising the treble and lowering the bass, is needed. But I’ve dealt with this style and you can improve it. If you get inside the pickguard you will probably find a...

    Re: Round core mandolin strings?

I’m confused. Are we talking about flatwound strings?

Most wound strings use a round core. Hex core is the exception, usually advertised.

There are several makers of flatwound strings, with...

Acoustic (Headway undersaddle with built-in preamp) —> passive volume control —> amp

Electric —> overdrive pedal —> EQ —> amp

Same amp for either, Trace Elliot Elf into Eminence 6.5” woofer(s).
