    Re: Fret markers

One sees the tenth fret marked on many (most?) tenor guitars.
  2. Re: Wrote me a new song... so I added some mando!

I really like the mandolinning. Good singing too. I am not a good judge of the lyrics. I believe if I heard them 100 times, i would really like them. But on first hearing, if all the singing were...

    Re: UPS rant

I have had experience with all the different shippers, and very (very) rarely had a problem with any of them.

As an aside 60 miles is not a crazy drive for a musical instrument. I much prefer...

I have the Blue Sky Boys box set. And for a while i had those CDs as my exclusive rotation, just on all the time. You get those harmonies and riffs in your head and they will eventually come out your...

    Re: Fret markers

I guess a lot of this is prejudiced on what you are used to and how you came about as a musician. That acknowledged, to me, the tenth fret marker just makes so much sense on instruments normally...
  6. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

The difference between mandolin prices and guitar prices, IMO, has little to do with comparisons of relative difficulty of manufacture.

It is almost entirely do to supply and demand. The market...

    Re: upgrade thoughts

I don't know where you are in NY (guessing by your name), NY has many good places to kick a few tires and then buy a mandolin. Many. Might be a fun road trip.

I can tell you I have traveled a lot...
  8. Re: Just to put myself on notice for some accountability...

Let me pile on. If you wait till you feel ready, it ain't never gonna happen. I guarantee that the first time you play at a jam or with others, it will not be because you feel ready, but because you...

    Re: Five String Madness

I know. Surprised me too. Especially how the bridge is angled one way and the nut the other way. But I measured it.

Re: My pinky won't go where I tell it!

I think the key is to begin with the pinky. Put all the other fingers down after the pinky. That way the interdactyle space are evened out for the pinky from the start.

    I did the following amazing...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

I know I used to feel that way. When I first started using an electronic tuner i wondered if i was substituting eyes for ears. My experience is, first of all, that no tuner is accurate enough to...
  15. Re: So... They seem to think I'm starving and homeless?

I played on Grafton St. in the middle the middle of Dublin, with some street musicians who saw me walk buy with my case. There was a guitar, a fiddle, and a wooden German style recorder of some kind....
  16. Re: So... They seem to think I'm starving and homeless?

I am going to go with Jeff Mando on this. It is the uninvited, transgressive nature of the busking that makes it. That the busker has turned that little section of street into a music hall,...

    Re: Five String Madness

What has been explained to me is that mandolins are smaller than mandolas for a reason. The mandolas in general need a longer scale length. That when you try to get that much range on one...

Loan it to someone you trust who will play it for fifteen years. Likely for no charge.

There are many cool tuning apps available. Seeing as I always have my cell phone with me, this really works in a pinch.

    Re: Five String Madness

I am loving this as a jam instrument. I do a couple of old time tunes that end up down in the growlers. Like Joe Thrifts's "Whiteface", and it is fun to grab me some of that bottom C course.

    Also,...
  22. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

I drove down to my brother's for Thanksgiving, listening to Dolly, and came back listening to Bluegrass.

    Re: Mandolin vs. Mandola?

I had both for a while. I found that even though I brought both to the jam the mandola did not see as much play. I mostly played it at home.

Later when I only had a mandola, I kept looking for...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

I love the Snark. I suspect many of the reported battery eating problems are due to the microphone not being turned off on when you put the thing away. It keeps working there in your mandolin case,...
