Re: Blues on the Mandolin - Let's Hear Ya!

    Wow guys!

Love it. The Neil Diamond sounds great, and Freddie King is one of my all-time favorites. Some sweet playing and singing. :-)

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

Good luck. I have done a couple of outdoor jams with uillean pipes, an accordion or two, nyckelharpa(s) and fiddles. Most could hear me okay. And when my wife has filmed us the mandolin does come...

Well, it probably depends on the particular situation. I just came back from a (mostly Irish and Old-time) jam session which included one other mando (resonator type), two guitars (sometimes three),...

Re: Blues on the Mandolin - Let's Hear Ya!

Mark, thank you! I like it a lot, and like any other idea it just seemed to come out of nowhere one day (Who can tell where an idea or a tune comes from?). I don't have any sheet music for it...

Re: Blues on the Mandolin - Let's Hear Ya!

All of this is awesome, everyone. Thank you!

Here’s Freddie King’s “See See, Baby.” He is my favorite of the three kings, and his music is quite translatable to the mandolin. I have about 10 more...

So happy about all of this chatter. Thanks again to Marc for providing so much great material. You're a true stylist, Marc!

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

Have TI Stark on the Coombe and D'Addario FW on the Strad-O-Lin. Obviously different instruments. Will still compare them. The D'Addario are not as flexible as the TI, and obviously don't have the...

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I liked the Mittels on several of my instruments but the extra cost of the wound A strings wasn't worth it for similar sound, feel and longevity with the D'Addario Flat Tops.

At that price point, you're right on the cusp of the next tier up where things start to get really good. I'd suggest considering a used instrument like a Northfield Model M, one might pop up in the...

I have been a lurker for several years and have decided to bite the bullet and purchase a Mando.

I have used Jubilee for years for cured varnishes and like how it cleans and polishes. I personally wouldn't use anything but a dry or damp polishing cloth until the varnish cures, 6 months minimum;...

Like several here, “dark and throaty” made me think of an Ellis A5 or even an oval. But if you’re committed to an F5, then I’d look for a small builder who is under the radar and then...

I use that kind of pick for a guitar, but for mandolin, I want something with more backbone, like a D'Andrea Proplec or a casein pick. To each his own.
