    Re: RIP Stonewall Jackson

One of the greats without question. This is such a superb and bleak song- and a great album:

  2. Re: VEGA tenor lute. banjo - tenor guitar - octave mandolin!

Well done! It does have its original case, which will protect it during its journey and also means you do not have to try to find a case. The seller appears to have what one would hope are all the...

    Re: Is this a mandolin?

Here is a thread which is about a similar mandolin and Jim has posted up a photo as well and we can see the sort of bridge these were blessed with when new. The mandolin in question is one made after...
  4. VEGA tenor lute. banjo - tenor guitar - octave mandolin!

That's the headline the seller has used. Interesting instrument with a great case which someone can definitively identify, I would hope..

  5. Re: Interesting: Vintage 1937 Gibson/Kalamaz guitar-bodied Mandoc

I have seen a circa 1939 Cromwell archtop that was sold in the UK new. It has a large Gibson logo- much bigger than normal on the headstock and I have always thought it was done for the UK dealer...

Re: 1920s Harmony Shutt Style Mandolin

There are members who might be able to confirm if it is a Shutt product. Certainly, a higher quality instrument. I have never seen a bridge like that before and it may well be original to the...

    1920s Harmony Shutt Style Mandolin

Sold as a Sterling which I seem to remember was a Tonk Bros brand. This seller likes to identify instruments as Regal made- he has a parlour guitar for sale described as such but they are both...
  8. Re: Interesting: Vintage 1937 Gibson/Kalamaz guitar-bodied Mandoc

Probably, infinitely less expensive, to buy your own Cromwell or Kalamazoo archtop- a good one can be found for less than $1,000 and convert it yourself and save a small fortune.

    Re: Harmony h35

As mentioned already, you need to get the instrument playing with all the electrickery working but it is a popular electric mandolin and you can search Reverb for prices although that site tends to...

    J. Thibouville-Lamy Tenor Guitar-UK

This old circa 1920s tenor is for sale in the UK and it looks to me that the action is very high. There was a thread here about one branded Jetel and that mentioned the cleats on the back which is...

Re: What brand mandolin is this?

Jim, I thought the bow tie was a giveaway for Aaron! He's an amazing musician, I forwarded some videos of him to a friend who is the guitar tutor at a very famous music school. He wants to invite top...

Jim, I was scanning the posts and I did not mean to misattribute things to you that were not yours. Likewise, I missed the mention by oldhawkeye regarding the tailpiece but I am pleased that earlier...

    Re: Estate Sale Bowlback

You have not shown the tailpiece. Judging by the colour on the top, there appears to be a slight change where a cover from the tailpiece might have been for many years. This may be a sperate or...

    Re: Old Gibson Mandolin

It seems Gibson went the extra mile and changed all the screws but I would imagine that the screws in the top of the clamp were last used in the 1920s when Gibson changed to a pickguard bracket...

    Re: Old Gibson Mandolin

All those Phillips screws holding the truss rod cover and the tuners look like Gibson screws which further suggest that Gibson did the work. I would imagine that the slot head screws still hold on...

    Re: Light Crust Doughboys NMC

I don't think that was Bob Wills as he had been gone a while having started The Playboys in 1933 or early 1934 and the clip is from 1936 but a fabulous piece of film, for sure.
  18. Re: Vintage Two Point Carved Top Mandolin - Looking for informati

I have seen a set of tuners with many similarities but not the same advertised as 1970s units on eBay but this seller is not always correct with his attributions. Here is the headline:

  19. Re: Vintage Two Point Carved Top Mandolin - Looking for informati

Show the tuners as they may help date its era. It appears to have been inspired by Martin archtop two point mandolins. It may be one that has been modified.

Re: Hoping someone has seen one of these before

It's a shame the photos are not bigger and we could see more detail. In motor cycle circles in the UK 50 years ago, it might be described as a "Bitsa". That is one marque's frame or engine (BSA)...

    Re: Beautiful bowlback

Yes, recessed tuners and fragile headstocks do go together. One would hope it is not serious and an easy fix but that would be revealed once the tuner unit had been removed. Ideally, the seller ought...
