I've bought Sitka spruce archtop (CBOM size) wedges from Alaska Specialty Woods https://alaskawoods.com/ twice and have been very pleased with the quality.
I never have to worry where my tuner is on my octave or if it's damaging my headstock. I's just as accurate as the clip on micro.

You can go to a String Gauge calculator site such as https://tension.stringjoy.com/ and put in your current gauges tuned to G , see what your tension is and then change to E and see what the tension...

I built a GBOM based on a free Gibson L00 plan for the outline and designed it for a 21" scale carved top and back. ...
Here you go right from this forum https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/135803-Dominick-Leslie-Watson-s-Blues-Transcription
On the two current mandolins you built I would try two things. 1st I would put a set of GHS silk and steel strings or flat wound strings on and see if that improves the tone. If that doesn't work...
The cheapest solution is a capo. For the cost of a new neck (or less) you could buy a new Eastman Octave with a 21" scale and that would keep your dad's Flatiron original.
I cut through the top fret slot so the nut would be against the fingerboard as traditionally set up, so no need to have a lot of fingerboard after the first slot (I think they need some offset for...
I built a 21" scale carved top octave and I ordered a custom slotted fingerboard. It was perfect and I'm about to order another for my next build. Here is the cutoff from the fingerboard with...
I bought a Prince double tennis racquet case that perfectly fits a Weber A model case- under $30 too - and they come with a shoulder strap.
Use available mandolin tab, use the second sting on the tab as your first string (A) and just play the notes that would be on the mandolin E (first) string on your A string at frets 7, 9 & 10
Make a jig to determine the neck angle. This is what I used on a carved top Octave Mandolin. I wanted a 7/8 to 1" bridge height and a 3 degree angle worked for my build. It takes all the guesswork...
Here's how to buy small amounts of hide glue :)

Get it a little runny and warm your spruce top with a heat gun. Spread...
Since you are able to build a kit you should be able to fix the crack. Use hot hide glue and some small cleats. Watch this video from an expert:

I think the Quartet looks beautiful, and much more dramatic in sunburst. Did you also use rattle cans to apply the sunburst?
That's how my bridge is. I just completed an Octave mandolin and used Graham McDonalds recommendation for bridge compensation
204698 I find that my D string is not compensated perfectly and if I...
I use Musescore to create mandolin tab. The caveat is it has a steep learning curve, but once you are comfortable it's great. I use the playback feature all the time to play along and it will play...
I bought the same type of cast tailpiece from China for a flat top mandolin I built. It was cheap enough that I was willing to risk breaking it to bend it to a flatter angle. I put the body in a vise...

I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer to your question. If you can't play these styles in person then the next best thing is to find examples being played on YouTube to see what you...
One other thing to consider is the difference between a flat top and a carved top OM. That might make more tonal difference than between an A style and a GBOM
I can't really say anything about the tonal differences between an A shape OM and a GBOM, but I think an important factor to consider is scale length, since that will dictate what you can play and...
