  1. Re: Finding a teacher when you have very specific musical interes

I think Marla's Peghead Nation course is really great value for the money, if you want to learn to play irish tunes on the mandolin with great feel and lift then I'd highly recommend Marla - she also...
  2. Re: How do these on-line private-sales work? Pay first or ship fi

You don't ship until you've received the payment. Touch wood, I've never had anything go wrong with past sales. I do feel more comfortable if I'm selling something via the classifieds here, vs. using...

  4. Re: New guy looking for advice on travel with mandolin

Yeah, like mandokismet says, I would think that if you treat the mandolin similar to how you would a recently shipped mandolin - letting it acclimate slowly before opening the case up, that you'd be...

Re: To look at the mando or not?

Sometimes I look at the fretboard, sometimes I don't. I do find that if I want to remember a tune I need to play it a couple of times with my eyes closed and that really helps embed it.

Re: Tenor Guitar Gallery & Sightings

Gorgeous Fletcher tenor there Jim, I still bitterly regret selling my all mahogany Fletcher tenor a number of years ago. Financially I didn't have a choice but it's definitely "the one that got away"...

    Re: Pick Thickness

Echoing what has already been mentioned here, the type of mandolin you're playing/how heavy your strings are may influence your preference, in addition to what type of music you play. I play Irish...

Re: Mandolin armrests - Yes, No, Type?

I really like the McClung armrests and found that they put my arm at a good angle for playing. I decided to not put one on my Girouard when it arrived and have adjusted fine to playing without one,...

    Re: Looking for instruction

When you say "irish style of songwriting" are you talking about songs with words or are you talking about tunes? - Echoing the recommendation above, Marla Fibish would be able to help you with both...

    Re: Mandolin flagship song?

Depends on what genre of music you play on the mandolin as well - not all of us play Bluegrass, so a "must know" tune in that world wouldn't be the same for folks who play irish trad music (like...

    Re: Video: The Princess

The Gypsy Princess is one of my favourite tunes - lovely playing all round! The cello sits so nicely in the tune. We have a wonderful young trad cello player here in Ireland, Sharon Howley, an...

Re: Multiple guitars but just one mandolin

I only have one mandolin (and one guitar, and one tenor banjo) because the herd needed to be thinned over the years either due to financial need or more recently, a transatlantic move home - the...

    Re: Keeping a practice journal

Yeah, I'm lucky that I live rurally and my other half has good ear plugs!

I'm using a Word Doc "notebook" template - and the tabs for each section are:

    - A list of tunes I'm re-learning (I have...

Re: How Many Like Blonde Mandos??

I don't think there is any finish I dislike on a mandolin except for a poorly done burst (like those black into yellow kind of bursts that show up on some super cheap mandolins for example). I've had...
