Re: Flatiron, A-5 Artist Mandolin 1997 Thoughts?

Fabulous price for essentially a MM Gibson if it is legit with no issues. I don’t know enough to tell from the pictures but maybe someone does? “No returns” is worrisome.

    I had an A5 artist...

You know, you’re right Hendrix. It’s impossible to tell by direct observation because of the binding. I have been told by several luthiers that the frets on these are bar frets, so just accepted that...

I don't know anything about the folk music, but all serious mandolinists are at least aware of Calace, right?

    Re: Expensive mandolins

Joe Bonamassa has to have everything!

I went to a camp, and had by far the cheapest instrument there with my $900 Kentucky. Most had builder instruments, and a few with good shop-made mandolins...

    Re: Poor Man's Gibson

Yes, right, the woods can be identical, dimensions identical, construction methods identical, but if it doesn't have that Gibson on the peghead, it just won't sound right.

Re: Since when is 1970s "vintage" ?

Vintage=perceived value increased due to age.

For the mandolin market, that would still mean prewar, right? For a fender electric bass, people have been paying a "vintage" premium for...

Re: Next frontier: What's next after Mandolin???

Very nice. I love that music, and that squeezebox gets very close to the piper's vibe. Well-played pipes never fail to give me goosebumps.

For myself, I dabble badly in other styles, but always...

    Re: Monroe tunes

It is not possible to play bop without playing Bird. Parker's style is bop. Players were able to develop the style, but at some point it is something else.
Same applies to Bill monroe, i think.

Listen to jazz. Listen to musicians, not instruments. Don Stiernberg is great, but you must hear Sonny Rollins, etc...
