Re: Recordings of Mandolins as String Quartets

This arrangement of a Zappa piece was never intended as a string quartet, but it does amuse me:

    Re: Cello to Mandocello Conversion?

A "bowed guitar from a cello" would be a re-invention of a very old instrument: the bass viol (or viola da gamba). Cello-size, six strings, fretted and bowed. Played upright like a cello or (more...

    Re: Cello to Mandocello Conversion?

Dennis Havlena is a real tinkerer and inventor of really odd instruments. He made the guitello. His web page is a real blast. Be sure to scroll all the way down to take it all in....

    Re: Cello to Mandocello Conversion?

Yes, the critical geometry related to supporting string tension is all wrong. The neck angle is way too high, to start with. You could put a new neck on it and beef it up enough, presumably. But then...

    Re: Cello to Mandocello Conversion?

It would be like playing a guitarrón.
It would not work well. Bracing, sound post both wrong. Only room for 4 strings. Hard to hold.

Re: Charlie Parker's Tico Tico Backup

Here is the version the OP probably means, in A minor.

And here is the classic hit version from 1945, in G minor.
  13. Measurements of Mike Marshall's cello nut and bridge

I am coming into an Eastman cello and I've read all about the string spacing issues with this instrument. Mike Marshall was nice enough to provide me a tracing of his nut and bridge. I added a ruler,...
  14. Re: How long carbon fiber rod for a Gibson A?

There are so many thousands of old Gibsons that clearly have no need for a CF rod, after 70 or more years. Why are you doing this?
  15. Re: How long carbon fiber rod for a Gibson A?

It's not necessary to continue the channel / rod through the neck joint and into the head block. Besides complicating future repairs on the neck joint, the amount of support it adds in that location...
