    Re: Ritchie Blackmore's octave

I agree it's ugly art! It's the sound I like - I think it's the same design as the first video.

    Re: Ritchie Blackmore's octave

I can't work up the interest to watch this with so much silly talking.

Yet you could work up the interest to post this - kudos.

    Re: Ritchie Blackmore's octave

    Well no, not really:

Actually, this looks more like a bouzouki, although in the first video I think it's an octave mandola. Same design though, and he has a gsimilar guitar as well.

    Re: Ritchie Blackmore's octave

I have too, but it doesn't look like any of the instruments on the Fylde website.

    Ritchie Blackmore's octave

Hi guys, I happened upon this video of Ritchie Blackmore with the most beautiful sounding octave mandola (octave mandolin). I don't know what make it is, but I love the sound, although I didn't like...
  6. Re: Just for fun and interest - favourite acoustic tones

I happened upon this video of Ritchie Blackmore with the most beautiful sounding octave mandola (octave mandolin). I don't know what make it is, but I love the sound, although I didn't like his...
  7. Re: My band asked me to stop playing guitar

There are three of us in my band, too. On most things the line up is mandolin, octave mandola (octave mandolin) and accordion. We have other instruments as well, but absolutely no guitar. Rather than...

    Re: Tremolo technique

Never. I haven't worn corduroy since the mid-1800s. I will admit to beating my wife often at Trivial Pursuit.

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

Some people have a pretty mixed-up idea of what music theory is. As soon as you give a name to a note, you’re using theory. When you work out a new chord, based around a tonic, third and fifth,...

    Re: Hathway Mandolin Query

Actually, I don't have a case for mine, but a very high quality padded bag. Having said that, I can't remember where I got it! I thought it was Hobgoblin, but I couldn't see it on their website. If...

    Re: Hathway Mandolin Query

I have the large-bodied mandolin. It's loud enough and more importantly it has a lovely tone. It's a great instrument, severely under-priced! When I tried the standard I was very disappointed. It...
  12. Re: Thile Fingering for Bach's Corrente (B Minor Partita)

I prefer to think that I got it right and old JS got it wrong 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
  13. Re: Thile Fingering for Bach's Corrente (B Minor Partita)

Hi Jake, thanks for posting this – it’s lovely. I didn’t know this, so it’s a welcome addition to my Bach selection (BTW I already have the Courante from the Cello Suite no. 3 – if you don’t know it,...

Re: Free PDF's of Technical Exercises

Thanks for making these PDFs available, Jim. I thought at first they'd be useful to my students, but now I see they'll be useful to me too!

Re: where might one acquire a Mandocello?

You don't say where you are, so I'm guessing the US. Pity. In the UK Paul Hathway makes lovely mandocellos: lovely to look at, lovely to play and lovely to hear.

    Re: Tremolo technique

Heh heh, so it's up there with admitting to beating my wife or wearing corduroy?

Seriously, playing trad Irish, Scottish and English tunes there's not a lot of need for tremolo.

    Re: Tremolo technique

I'll be honest, I've never really liked tremolo, and as a consequence, I've never learned to do it well!

However, to be a good all-round musician I suppose I should be able to do it, and when...
  18. Re: is an arm rest a benefit to technique ?

Ha ha, Jim. They're not plastic? My mistake, I had no idea! My mandolins are of the so-called Celtic variety - nothing added!
  19. Re: is an arm rest a benefit to technique ?

I would add that there's absolutely no way I'd deface a beautiful instrument by unnecessarily screwing a large piece of plastic onto it.
  20. Re: Do you shift positions for hammer-ons/pull-offs?

I would add that pulling off can be made more effective by giving the string a little flick as you pull your finger off. This can make pulling off your 4th finger to your 3rd sound pretty good. The...

Hey guys, thanks for your responses. Seems like my guess about the frequencies was correct, though still not sure why it should be so. The stuff about the sound holes was completely new to me, all my...

    Palm mute

Hi, when I mute the strings of my mandolin or octave mandola it creates a very bassy sound. Great! I was just wondering if anyone knows what is actually going on. My guess is that somehow it's...

Re: "Dave Swarbrick Fiddle Tunes" Book

    Heh heh, entirely plausible.

    Nice tunes, Martin.

In the spirit of reciprocity, our version of Ribbons is here: https://thejonesboys.org/media/ (top right!).

Re: "Dave Swarbrick Fiddle Tunes" Book

I agree Swarb probably didn't compose it himself - but where does that leave us?

It seems almost inconceivable that the only references to Ribbons are Swarb's recording of it!

    One thing, Swarb...

Re: "Dave Swarbrick Fiddle Tunes" Book

Ah. Thanks Martin. I love the tune, and my band has recorded it, but it annoys me greatly that, apart from DS recording it, nothing seems to be known about it.

    Perhaps Dave composed it?
