Captivated from the first notes as usual. Such lovely playing on this album across the board. Amazing what Nick gets out of the banjo with two fingers too. Good music fans should check out his two...

    Re: your mandolin ownership history

This is fun. I'll try to remember them all. Only ones I have left are the Voight A-5 and the Bayard Blaine GBOM.

    1) Some pacrim asian a-5 I picked up at a pawn shop in college. Not sure what...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

Very nice and cool idea on microwaving the dry stuff. I've had the best results making casein patties (see earlier in this thread) on day one and then cutting with a pen knife a day or two later...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

Here’s the Panama Reds (2%). They seem sturdy enough to not need the poly coat, but I’d definitely recommend just sticking to skim milk. They dry much faster and harder. These are totally usable and...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

    Hi Mark,

On day one, I just kind of form them into a flat patty like shape about the size and thickness of a McD's burger, maybe slightly thicker. Each of those patties is in the pic attached here...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

It’s just simple food coloring. You can add it right to the milk pre-curdling or if you want a little more control and different colors you can add it into the curds when kneading them out. This one...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

Getting some much harder quicker drying results with the skim milk and 2 percent milk. Here's a cool one that I started about 10 days ago. Still shaping it but it feels pretty rock hard even without...
  11. Re: which is better mass produced mando...Loar or Eastman

setup is super important in this price point, so I'd avoid used and non-reputable sellers that don't set them up before shipping. talk to some of the companies that advertise here and sell the models...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

Back at it for round 2 with some skim milk this time. The curds formed into a fresh mozzarella-like ball easily this time but in draining it, the casein was much more crumbly. It may or not have some...

As for durability, time will certainly tell, and I'll update here as I play with them more. The Red Bear casein (galalith) pick was the first expensive pick I bought, and I remember it cracking (and...

    Re: Homemade Casein Picks

    Hi Jim!

That wasn't the exact process I followed, but it's essentially the same. I used whole milk, and that may well have slowed my drying time/lessened my curd yield as I guess there's more fat...

    Homemade Casein Picks

Anyone ever try to make casein picks from scratch? I decided to try after learning about it being a fairly simple process of adding vinegar to warm milk. Took a while to dry and harden (over two...
  18. Re: Microphone recommends for home studio recording?

I use a Myrtle which is a spring mounted edwina. I love it for a range of different uses from guitar to singing. It's kind of my main go-to for everything with good results. I've also used it to mic...

  21. Re: Matt Miller Picks - New to the Pick Market - Great pick/price

  22. Re: Make/model of this Levon Helm mandolin

Amy Helm also plays what looks like an F-9 in addition to Levon's Flatiron F. Maybe it is the former.
  23. Re: Make/model of this Levon Helm mandolin

I think that might be larry campbell's gibson f-9. video is from 2008 and i don't think the jam masters were out yet.
