Peter, I might be able to bring my mando up to you. As long as I'm getting work done on it, perhaps I should get the fretboard radiused more...
Hi everybody!
My Eastman 615 needs a bit of work—the grooves in the nut were too shallow when I bought it, so the action is very high down the neck. The neck has bent outwards somewhat too, which...
They use false harmonics.
Anyone know how I can get in contact with Matt? Perhaps at the little music shop in the Middle of Nowhere? I want to ask him some questions about the crazy chords he plays(ed).
I learned it a while ago, and now it's one of my show-off pieces. Along with In Which Jesse Goes To Hualalai And Meets A Sea-Urchin and a few other Chris Thile pieces.
I emailed Béla about Matt's work on Tales. He didn't say much in his response, but agreed that Matt is an outstanding talent, and that he enjoyed working with him on the album.
That is the mando I want. I'm gonna get me one if'n it's the last thing I do! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
I've played Epiphone mandos with necks joined at the 15th fret, yet all the new ones seem to have shorter necks (joined at 12th fret). I think I even played a 15th fret at a music shop... Wonder why...
Matt Mundy comes really really close to achieving the Sammy Boy Chop on Pickin' Up The Pieces, a track on Everyday by Widespread Panic. That guy is sooo talented!
And the back. I think blue sunbursts look tacky; even colour is better in my opinion!
Holst already makes Monteleone-inspired mandos, so if I could save three grand, I'd ask him to make one of these:
(It's a Radio Flyer, hue-shifted ;) )
May I suggest that people interested in mandolin-flavoured choro music listed to Hamilton Holanda's CD called Velas? He is one hot young player!
Think Chris Thile level chops applied to Jacob do...
How about the love song Chris Thile wrote in the 50s? You'll need a mandocello backup.
I use a trackpad, which I think is far more ergonomic than a mouse ;)
I haven't tried a Rigel, but I really want to. Curse my geographical location!
I have a Johnson A-style without a truss rod, but with a carved top and back. It's not much too look at, but it sounds quite good. Much better than a Washburn F-type I tried out, that cost about 4...
Interesting about the vitamin B6, I might try it. I agree that the computer is at least as bad as the mando. One seems to exacerbate the problems caused by the other!
Try adapting mandocello-mandolin duets (eg from Mike Marshall and Chris Thile's work). That's what I've done; I've got In Which Jesse Goes To Hualalai And Meets A Sea Urchin arranged for mando,...
Glamour and Grits by Sam Bush would be my first recommendation. Anything by him, really! And Chris Thile has a great chop too. Sam's secret is to let it ring out longer than most other players.
I would love to hear this little thing... maybe someone can record it and put it on the web?
It's great to hear from other fans of Matt! Justin, I'm interested to hear if you get in touch with him.
The electric mandolin site has a pic of the electric Matt played, built by Jim Bickerstaff....
Wow, a piccolo mandolin! Incredible, I've never seen one before.
To expand on the lightly resting thing, just being able to sense where the strings are in relation to your wrist helps to keep it from moving around too much. That's why I only lightly touch it. I...
Chris Thile lightly rests his wrist just behind the bridge, and from what I can tell it certainly doesn't harm his tone ;) He doesn't do it all the time, though.
I find that planting my little...
I've been salivating over pics of original-looking mandos by Steve Holst and Devil's Dream (you can get to their websites through the Eyecandy page).
They both make visually stunning instruments,...
I agree that ultimately he must do whatever makes him happy...
I found a good promo pic of him and ARU (it's very very hard to find photos of him!) He's the guy on the left.
