    Re: Advice on mandolin Upgrade

Howard has a real good reputation, and his mandolins are considered as good as more expensive brands.

    Re: Advice on mandolin Upgrade

Just to emphasize: US Breedloves get better reviews than imported Breedloves.

    Re: Broken Tuner Key

I'd upgrade the tuners. Not fond of Golden Age. I do like Grover, Schaller, and Gotoh.

If you ever sell it, buyers appreciate tuner upgrades.

    Re: Bobelock arrow case

Just looked at their website. The prices seem good for what you get.
  5. Re: Mandolin case for a Martin Style C mandolin

I'd email TKL at www.tkl.com, tell them what I have, and ask what they have that it'll fit.
  6. Re: Pedal novice question re: preamp pedal

There are lots of A/B switch boxes on the market. Browse those and pick one you like. I have a couple by Loop-Master.com. They're terrific and the prices are great, but the delivery time is too long...

Re: Low, Low Frets on SOL

    Yup. You're there, Laddy.
  8. Re: an audience that is engaged with the performer

    He's terrific.

If you love audience participation, go to a Gaelic Storm show sometime. They don't just get everyone up and doing stuff. They even tell everyone what bar they're going to after the...
  9. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

    Best or favorite?

Can't help much. Haven't played many, and never a high-roller instrument. Best was my Red Line A5. Favorite is my 1920s Gibson Junior A.
  10. Re: Best way to learn Mandolin with ADHD

That's very close. To be exact, we can't ignore distractions. It's physically impossible. I can't carry on a conversation if a TV is on, even with the sound off. In a bar or restaurant, I have to...
  11. Re: Artist/Album Recommendations like Punch Brothers & Sierra Hul

    Grisman, Solivan, Del Grosso, Mitterhoff.

Dave Grisman's duo stuff with Jerry Garcia certainly qualifies as newgrass. In another direction, his recordings with Stephane Grappelli brought a new...
  12. Re: First Mandolin Choice, what is available to me now

    Welcome, Phaedrus!

Since your mandolin ear isn't developed yet, just get one that's comfortable to play and doesn't hurt your eyes. Once you've been playing for a while, you'll be a better judge...
  13. Re: Most tunes I post to YouTube are 65+ years old

I saw a thread yesterday about a short video from probably the early seventies of a young guy stopping Neil Young in a park to ask him how to play "Cinnamon Girl." Neil tuned the guy's guitar to...

    Re: Demonstrating a mandolin

I'm sure someone does, but I don't. Videos don't do a good job of capturing how an instrument sounds in real life. Or how I'll sound playing it. You get an idea of whether it can be tuned, but that's...
  16. Re: Just got a tone-gard a couple days ago

I've read that Bill Monroe did it that way because he didn't want to take his hat off every time he put his mandolin on or took it off. He was self-conscious about what his hat did to his hair.
  17. Re: Just got a tone-gard a couple days ago

    Love mine.

I've been playing guitar for a long time, but mando for only a few years. And when you're full of guitar habits, there's a lot to think about when you play a mandolin: scales and...

Re: Best Place to Shop For Mandolins

I've bought most of mine online.

The best over-the-counter places I know of are in Nashville, like Gruhn's and Carter's.
  19. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

    Hey, Ayo Leo!

With a lot of higher-end instruments, you're paying for the decoration. Inlays, scrolls, points, and bindings are all extra work that your fingers won't feel and your ears won't...
  20. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

I don't denigrate the quality of the products. But I have real problems with the labor and environmental standards of a lot of other countries. China alone has over a million slave laborers, and...

    Re: My Journey so far.

    Welcome, Tom!

Guitar guy here who bought a used Fender mandolin on a whim* five or ten years ago. It was crap, but it was a hoot to play, anyhow, and it got me going nicely. Your instinct to wait...
