Re: 14” octave string set questions

I suspect the point is that they don't quite exist! The trick (in our real world) is to get the string thin enough that the "dead" zone at each end is such a tiny percentage of the vibrating length...

    Re: Broken Tuner Key

I started to comment on Paul Hostetter and his website, but decided that it needed it's own thread.

And yeah, Tri-Flow has become my bestest buddy: works great on odd stuff like vinyl storm...
  3. Paul Hostetter's website is available ....

I am SO happy to see that Paul Hostetter's website is again available; when I last looked 5 or 6 months ago, it was not. It's a wonderful resource, and he was a frequent poster here.

    IIRC, his...

    Re: Broken Tuner Key

If you bought it new, maybe a waranty issue? If it's 20+ years old, that might be just old enough for machine oil to polymerize and become sticky, causing a button to break. It does happen. I have...
  5. Re: First Mandolin Choice, what is available to me now

Congratulations on a well-thought out first step! Lots of the MC-standard helpful advise here.

Finger & skin chemistry varies widely. Some of us get tarnish after an hour of play, followed by...

Re: Rearranging strings on a mandolin?

Even one of the greats, Sam Bush, is particularly fond of that shape. Since there's no 3 note, it fits either A major OR minor.

On of my favorite cheats for A is: A-major = 6700 (C#,A,A,E) and...

    Re: playing late and drinking

Y'all are bringing back way too many pleasant memories. While I've described my folk music experience as "'round the campfire", that mostly means "'round the 6-pack".

    Only once that made an...
  8. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

Suspectin' that Gene 'n' the boys jus' tuned to that there piano out on the back porch!
  9. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

Sorry if I've never been impressed by the Snarks; I just find the D'Addarios (and their predecessors, the Planet Waves, etc.) easier to read. And easy to adjust to non-standard tuning (flute player...

    Re: Replacing a broken tailgate

That's an unusual 3-screw pattern. If you search "mandolin tailpiece", you'll see that they commonly have 3 screws in a triangular format, often with the strap peg in the middle. And there are no...
  11. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

Add me to the "back of headstock" list. I've had one on my D-35 for maybe 12 or 15 years, ever since the StewMac-sold predecessor (I forget the name) came out.

Re: Advice on a Replacement Bridge

    Not quite an aside:
It's not a question of IF a new bridge's feet will fit the top; ALL new bridge's feet will need to be fit to the top. As noted above, wood is variable.

    Re: Vintange Mandolins in Ireland

Maybe off topic, maybe helpful, definitely closer to home. One never knows...

Music Villa in Bozeman, MT, was tremendously helpful back in 1990, as I began searching for a GOOD but cheapish...
  15. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

Since that's a recurring theme in this thread, per "Turkey in the Straw", I have to comment (just off the top of my head, without further reseserch):

Many of our popular folk and "childrens" songs...
  16. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

Been there: Senior Citizens' club Christmas luncheon, maybe 5 years ago. Requested song was "Edelweiss", and that gig is now one of MY warmest memories!

    Re: Question About Carry-On Instruments

Thanks for that. Personally, I'll probably still carry (meaning that I haven't yet) the full 6-page details with the specific parts highlighted. The full text is "Federal Register/Vol. 80, No....
  18. Re: Tailpiece tines are bent upward: new tailpiece needed?

    Being somewhat contrarian:
It looks to me like three bass-edge tines, including two unused ones (w/ no upward string pull), took some kind of hit and have been bent downward. All the others,...

    Re: First fret frets

Welcome to the world of setup! Frets.com should become your bestest buddy, thanks to the (recently-passed) Frank Ford. Do note that 99.99% applies to mandolin even if it says "guitar".

    This s/b...

    Re: Wide Nut Fever?

    Re: very odd mando tuners

I have an S-V with those tuners. They do work but I've been hesitant to use the mandolin extensively without lubricating the gears. The black cover/plugs (look like bakelite to me) are firmly...

    Re: Joni Mitchell Mandolin?

I thought I had read an article, 6 or 8 months ago, stating that it was a mandocello. I found this similar-enough one (or same one?) on the lady's website:...
