    Re: How to remember tunes?

For me, learning a tune by ear or visually seems to embed it in my brain much better than learning by tab.

When I started, I lived on MandoLessons, and learned a bunch of fiddle tunes. Baron...

Re: right wrist, rotate or up and down?

    Interested in opinions as well.

I've heard it described as either "tapping with a small hammer" or "turning the ignition key"

Coming from guitar, I tend more toward the ignition key, but I've...

    Re: Mandolin to DADGAD

As a guitar/bass player for around 50 years, IMO you should start with standard tunings and get some basic skills there. You have a vastly larger set of music that is intended to be played in...

    Re: The Myth of Perfection

    "Perfect" <> "Flawless"

And context matters, too. An old broke-in pair of Levis is perfect for a Sunday afternoon at home, but not for a black-tie wedding reception. Similarly, not likely anyone...

Re: Strategies for learning without teachers?

I started with mandolessons.com, and have been working through Sharon Gilchrist's Intermediate sessions on Peghead Nation. Highly recommend both.

  14. Re: NMD - impulse purchase, and an F style to boot

Congrats - it's a beaut! Looks very similar to the 2000 Bitterroot F that I had. The mahogany has a real nice quality to it. Very warm tone.

FYI, I added a Tone-Gard to mine and it improved the...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I also have one of each. I love the aesthetics of both. One has the flourish, one the simplicity. Both are high-quality mandos, with different sounds, but that is the result of the way they are...

They are big fans of Neil. They have covered "Cowgirl In The Sand" for a long time, both as a duo and with the band.

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

Definitely agree with getting the best instrument you can afford, not one you think you are "good enough" to merit buying. Playing a bunch in all price ranges will go a long way in determining that,...

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

Agree with the suggestion to hop over to Gryphon and play a bunch. Only you know what tone you're after.

Also agree that an instrument from Will Kimble should be included in the running.

Re: To Cafe Members on the US West Coast

Supposed to be rain/thundershowers tonight, but I'm not seeing any on the radar maps.

Worse would be dry lightning, which could touch off more fires.

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

This is why I switched to the Polytune. The Snark would say a string is dead on, but I could hear the difference with the other string.

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

I went through this a few months ago. Got really tired of the inaccuracies of the Snarks and settled on a Unitune. They are nearly impossible to find in stock. Ended up getting a Polytune, which...
