  1. Re: just starting out - what are my string options?

Well, yesterday, I changed the strings on my Blueridge BR 70BR tenor guitar, and played it some this morning. I like it lots better than CGDA or DGBE. It sounds more to me Like a “real” guitar. ...
  2. Re: just starting out - what are my string options?

If one tunes to GDAE I think he can also capo up 4 to CGDA. Isn’t that correct?

    Slides

Anybody ever try a slide? I bought one a long time ago, and just lately decided to give it a try.

I’m making some progress with it, and it’s interesting, enjoyable and something to do.

    Re: Jazz Picks

Yeah, DavidKOS, I’ve seen those grips. I usually try to do things the “correct” way, but lots of players seem to use the pinch too. I think I’m gonna go with the pinch grip held very loosely. I...

    Re: Jazz Picks

It’s not so much the shape of the PT Jazzes; it’s the size, and that it’s sculpted too. It really works well with the “pinch” grip that I always end up usin’. I’ve tried to get comfortable with the...

    Re: Jazz Picks

Yes, bradeasley, I agree. I have some Prime Tone 1.3mm and 1.5mm semi-round, sculpted picks and a coupla no-namers. I also sometimes use the rounded part of other sizes. My tremelo is slowly...

    Re: Jazz Picks

Yes, DavidKOS, I can play and remember chords, but not as many as I’d need to play some of the other banjo/mandolin styles. I do add some in my playing though. I played wind instruments in my 70...

    Re: Jazz Picks

bradeasley, I mostly play single note, Irish and Italian, on my mando-banjo, and I use as few chords as possible. I tried and tried to learn a bunch of chords, but my poor, ol’ brain had lots of...

    Re: Jazz Picks

Thanks, sheets, I just wondered about the “Jazz”.

I’m pretty happy with Jim Dunlop’s picks and mostly use Prime Tones for my Mando-Banjo, but I’m still experimenting with sizes. I use his .60mm...

    Jazz Picks

What makes Prime Tone Jazz picks—Jazz Picks?

I bought some 1.4s just to check ‘em out, and I really like ‘em. I’m only a Low Intermediate mandolin player at best, but they really feel right to...

This won’t be any help to you, but I have hearing problems too. I’m looking forward to your thread, hoping to learn something about hearing for musians.

Re: Gig bags: The Good and Bad

I got a great gig bag with my Gold Tone Mando-Banjo. Maybe their gig bags for their regular mandolins are as good. I think it’s worth a look.
  14. Re: Traditional Slow Airs of Ireland by Tomás Ó Canainn?

I have the aforementioned book. I use it to learn and play the Airs on my flutes and whistles and now on my mando-banjo. It contains some very beautiful pieces. My only complaint about it is that...

    Re: Mandolin Ornaments

The last time I encountered the triplet/treble question, there was quite a debate over it. I don’t remember the final outcome, if there was one. I guess it shows a big problem with words. As an...

    Re: Mandolin Ornaments

I think many of the musicians here are aiming for the perfect Celtic "sound" and the exact traditonal way of playing this music. But some of us late beginners who will probably never achieve those...

I must confess, that when I played Irish music on my other instruments, I mostly played it the way I heard it with only a bit of my own interpretation.

I'm still struggling with my banjo and...

    Re: Mandolin Ornaments

I still don't understand the difference between triplets and trebles. I think it was explained to me once, but the post got all controversial and a debate started. So, anyway, what's the difference?

    Re: Mandolin Ornaments

At the beginning of this post. I was asking about triplets as in the banjo ornament. Anyway, I also know that many Irish mandolinists don't care much for them, but we've somehow gotten off the track...

When playing Irish Slow Airs or Songs on a mandolin does one play triplets? Pull offs? Hammer Ons? Slides? Anything else?

I've decided to follow that road for a while and do jigs, reels, etc...
