    Re: Las Vegas Music Scene

We were on Fremont in the daytime. (What a cesspool!) No bands, some busking.

    Re: Las Vegas Music Scene

We didn't bring our instruments (and I'm sure missing mine!). I do think busking might be fun. Maybe sometime when you come to Dallas???

    Re: Las Vegas Music Scene

No success; however, I didn't pursue beyond this thread. Surely some jams are happening. Some shows are opening in November.

    Re: mandolin teachers

Jon Hall, Nacogdoches, TX. Also, Gerald Jones, Garland, TX, as long as you're not a beginner or have natural ability. It really depends on what you're looking for, though. My regular teacher is a...

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

Thanks so much, Jon. This album is available with my Pandora subscription - and I've started listening.

    Las Vegas Music Scene

I'm leaving this Saturday on a girls' trip to Las Vegas. Does anyone know of any outdoor performances, jams, etc. we can attend while we're there? We're returning home on Wednesday.

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

I envy those of you who can play hours on end. I get one hour each day I don't have a lesson. As to jamming, I hope to visit a local group soon. If you've seen some of my other recent posts, you know...

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

So, is there a distinction between playing 16th notes exclusively and tremolo, other than speed, maybe? I've never struggled much with tremolo. My greater challenge is 8th, 16th note combinations....

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

I've never known exactly what a "fiddle tune" is. Google gave me a fiddle tune archive, which I've downloaded to my phone. Some of these I've played off and on. So, is it important to memorize these?

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

Thanks, Dave. This what I'm looking for. My metronome is always going and I do gradually increase my speed. Relaxing is challenging, but I'm working on it. I'm also challenged rhythmically. ...

Re: Building Speed with 16th Notes

Thanks for the replies. I didn't intend for this post to be about tremolo; however, I can see how it might be interpreted that way. More and more I'm working on pieces with 16th notes. I figured I...

    Building Speed with 16th Notes

I'm interested in knowing, if you play a 2 octave G scale with 16th notes, what is the fastest speed you can play cleanly; i.e., quarter note equals what number? For clarification, each note is...

    Re: Turns and Mordents

She told me what they mean for violin, but doesn't know about mandolin. She suggested maybe tremolo.

    Re: Turns and Mordents

I posted the sample page in a pick direction post. Here it is again, with an excerpt from page 2, which starts at measure 15. The symbols in question start at measure 8. I highlighted them on my...

    Turns and Mordents

I'm working on a piece of music with turns and mordents. Does mandolin observe these notations?

Jim Garber, here's the music. I listened to this at musicnotes.com and I'm fairly certain the speed is faster than 40bpm![ATTACH=CONFIG]188871

    Re: Specific Pick Direction Question

The piece is from Musicnotes.com, if that helps. I'll try to post a section tomorrow.

I do work with a teacher, but she's a professional violin teacher, not a mandolinist. She had me playing...

    Specific Pick Direction Question

Please don't beat me up for asking this question when pick direction has been discussed "ad nauseum," as many have said. I did the Google search Scott recommends, but there's just too much info to...

    Re: Pentatonic scales

So, I'm working through some of the exercises in The Pentatonic Mandolin. I get that if you're playing the G major pentatonic scale, you don't play C or F# (4th and 7th). I'm thinking if I try to...

Thanks, Rob. I tried the "select tool" thing and once again got gobbledy gook.
  24. Copying from a PDF to Word - or Editing a PDF

I've been purchasing leadsheets, but sometimes have to buy sheet music with piano accompaniment. It occurred to me that, rather than cutting the music apart and taping the solo parts back together,...
