    Re: del vecchio vintage mandolin

I have a non-resonator DelVecchio of the typical Brazilian bandolim shape (see below). There is someone in the want ads also looking for a resonator version.

I don't know too many of the...

No apologies necessary. I specialize in my own form of hijacking but I call it taking a pleasant detour on another connected road or something like that.

    Re: LiuQin

I guess it is a guess to find out what one would be best to actually play music and is not a piece of junk. Would it be worthwhile to contact Red Music and do they have people there you can trust?

    LiuQin

The LiuQin is the closest Chinese instrument to the mandolin. I think one of the tunings they use is GDAE. I wonder if anyone has bought one either from an importer in the US or directly from China...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

I find that with all tuners it works better when I pluck with my bare fingers vs. using a pick while also muting the other strings. In addition, on mandolin, I generally get one of each pair in tune...

This early fluted Calace bowlback (up for live auction today) looks very nice but may have some structural issues (top may have some sinkage and bridge is positioned in the wrong location to provide...

Re: 1898 ward and son/ Marano mandolin

Go to the video on this link to see how to post photos.

Michele Marano was a student of Italian maker Vinaccia. Vinaccia mandolins, especially the more ornate ones in excellent condition, have...

Re: Can you name this Italian tune?

Could be Tarantella Calabrese? Maybe... it is very hard to tell. I did try to slow this video down. Then again, it may not. Also I don’t know if that would be the name of only one tarantella or the...

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

Yes, Jim... you have excellent taste. :)

I have been slaving over Oklahoma Redbird in Bb recently. Exceptionally fun on fiddle as well as mandolin.

    Re: Vega 20 string

    Wow! a 20 string! Must be a zither... :)

IIRC the one I had many years ago had the body of the regular 202 (mahogany back and sides) mandolin. There was a version with longer scale which may have...

Re: Still cant play a break!

Just keep it simple. You don't have to be Bill Monroe, Mike Compton, Chris Thile, etc. Just play the basic melody and maybe build on it. I also agree with Allen above to play with some other...

    Re: Odd headstock repair

The problem with both Brandt instruments and the earlier scrolled Lyon & Healy mandolins centered around the design of the headstock which used inlaid tuners. I bought an early L&H A model with a...

Re: Ciani mandolin really a Stradolin?

The label says nothing about Ciani. There were some mandolins that had Galiano labels with Ciani's name on them. I would guess that Galiano (IIRC a brand of Oscar Schmidt) distributed these bought...

    Re: Identify Vintage Mandolin Banjo

I don't see Stromberg (Chas. or -Voisenet) in the headstock. It actually looks like the same headstock used on turn of the last century Washburn bowlback mandolins. I just looked in Hubert's Washburn...

Personally I think the 8 strings are superior instruments to the shorter scale 10 strings. I never played the longer scans 10 string but I heard they sound better.
