    Re: Did someone say PICKS?

Shown - actual pick assortment of your average player who can't believe anyone would spend $5, $10 or $30 for a pick....

    Re: Wintergrass Headcount

Welcome! You realize this thread was about a get together 15 years ago - I don't know if there is anything cafe-specific for Wintergrass 2020. We had a similar mando tasting that Martin put...
  3. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

I missed a few episodes while working nights. Going back and streaming them now. I've really enjoyed it. One thing I like is how every artist they mentioned or interviewed seemed to get painted in a...

Re: Classically Trained, wanting to expand

I'm also a classically trained violinist. I took up bluegrass fiddle as a teen with lessons that were 100% watch, listen, play, repeat. Some 40 years later when I took up mandolin those fiddle...
  5. Re: Trillium Octave Internal K&K twin spot “sweet spot” location

I've installed twin head piezos in over 20 stringed instruments - fiddles, mandolins, mandola, octave mandolins, mandocellos, banjos, guitars, upright bass. In each case it sounds great to mount the...

Re: Ideas for a mandolin, $500-1,000

His actual name is Howard Morris but his friends all call him Sonny. He introduces himself as Sonny. We jam at our local Old Time Fiddlers club.

Re: Ideas for a mandolin, $500-1,000

Sonny Morris lives near me, and I've played over a dozen of his mandolins and fiddles. All are consistently great bang for the buck. NFI.

    Re: Jam etiquette

Wow, 12 or 20 people in a jam is too many IMO. If there is available room its a lot better to split into two jams of 6 to 10. If you can, arrive early next time and just ask one of the regulars how...

Re: Parting with a beloved mandolin

I couldn't bring myself to sell an instrument if I was already regretting the decision. I've only sold instruments when I had already replaced it with something much better and I knew I wouldn't...
  10. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

Oh for crying out loud! How do you suppose symphony orchestras, with violas and cellos all tuned C-G-D-A manage? You think having an E string vs a low C makes a difference in the keys you can play?...
  11. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

I don't get the comments of the mandola occupying the guitar's range but the mandolin doesn't. A mandola shares 3/4ths of the mandolin's range. I play violin and viola, as well as mandolin and...

    Re: Mandocello question

Here is a video of when I restrung my Eastman MDC805 mandocello as an OM. As Stevo said, you're already 3/4ths of the way there. You don't have to redo any bridge or nut slots just to try it out. ...

    Re: First Mando Buying Advice

Since you've been a musician for a while, you probably already know the results of getting a cheapo "mandolin shaped object." I wasn't aware of this when I bought my first inexpensive mando (also...
  14. Re: Straight Up Strings by Siminoff - any thoughts or experiences

Same here. Nothing wrong with them, nothing different either. Now on my cedar topped F5 I just put a set of DR RARE 11-40 phosphor bronze strings and they really pop! Currently my new favorite!

    Re: North Cascades Bluegrass Festival

The festival was great! Great bands (Frank Sollivan, Missy Raines, Colebrook Road) and regional favorites The Warren G. Hardings and Farmstrong. Ample dry camping available. Weather was good. I...

    North Cascades Bluegrass Festival

Anyone else going? I'm working till 6:30 Friday evening so I won't get there until Saturday morning. I'll likely be in one of the least desirable dry camping spots in an old 25' Airstream. Drop by...

    Re: K&K Pickup Question

My guess is getting that jack out to wire a new pickup to it is going to be tough. You have to remove the outside jam nut and withdraw the jack out an f hole, and it might not fit. I've worked on a...

    Re: K&K Pickup Question

Piezo's are transducers. IMO a soundboard transducer (SBT) yields better sound than a bridge or undersaddle transducer. And yes, an easy search here will reveal that there really isn't a lot of...

    Re: K&K Pickup Question

What is the issue with your "current piezo pickup which does the job, but it obviously suffers in terms of quality"? The K&K is also a piezo. Do you need a new output jack? Is there something...

    Re: Chords Guitar to Mandolin

What it "comes down to" is the mandolin is an octave higher than guitar, so of course it doesn't sound the same! A tenor singer doesn't sound like a bass singer! What you'll find (if you try) is...

    Re: beside the mandolin.

Same here, though the "low" E and A on my guitjo are replaced with octave higher strings to get the reentrant banjo goodness. I just pick the banjolin, no finger rolls.
  22. Re: Soliciting suggestions for my next mandolin (or not)

I have a sweet Morris hybrid F4 with western red cedar top. Custom built in 2010. I have 2 WRC mandos, one WRC octave and a redwood mandola and redwood mandocello. I've found both tonewoods to...

Re: Playing a five string vs a four

Just like guitar, you don't have to play all the strings on every chord. Picture a standard first position 3 finger G on mandolin - X523. On a 5 course C-G-D-A-E instrument this is XX523. Now...

Re: Best live gig setup for mandolin/guitar

I usually have piezo equipped mando, guitar and fiddle. My signal chain is instrument using 1/4" TR cable > A-B-C pedal > RedEye input. The RedEye loop includes my tuner pedal. The XLR RedEye...

Re: Best live gig setup for mandolin/guitar

I use a Morley A-B-C pedal. The one issue is it will make an audible POP if you don't mute when switching channels. I use my tuner pedal to mute when I switch instruments.
