Re: Brian Boru's March - Well Played

Beautiful. It brings back memories for me. I did this tune sometimes in a duo with a harp player who has passed on and this really struck me. Great emotional playing.

    Re: Take mandolin to Canada?

Collings shouldn't violate CITES so no problem there, however Canada is a mandolin free zone. Our previous Prime Minister had a phobia of double course instruments.

Re: Are mandolins born dy and woody?

I believe that most of what we consider opening up is the player learning to draw the tones he/she wants from the instrument. I have a humble Gibson A9 and I can draw so many tones from it depending...
  6. Re: Autumn Leaves - video and music, chords and tablature

Great version. I have been working on this tune a lot lately and found your phrasing and accents inspiring.
  7. Re: Just ordeded some primetone semi-round triangle picks

Ahh Primetones. I use the 1.5 351 shape and love them. On my humble A9 they bring out a far more complex and darker tone than the BC or Wegens. The only pick I like more is my GG Mock Turtle...
  8. Re: If you could only own one mandolin, which one would you keep?

My old GIbson A9 is the only mandolin I will need when society collapses. Looters would probably pass it by as it is kinda ugly and beaten up, but its bark would scare away zombies and its sweet...

    Seam separation problem

Don't know if this is the right forum for this so if not I apologize.

I have the opportunity to buy a really nice flat top guitar from a reputable dealer. The problem is it has had a center seam...

Re: Cheaper alternative to blue chip TAD 50?

I like the Primetones much better than the BC picks. I find with my play style the Blue chips sound very similar to a straight up Ultrex pick. If you know the size and shape you like it should be...

    Re: Pro Plec 1.5mm

I love the pro pleks. I have been using them so long I don't know when I started. They have a mellow woody tone with my playing. I have a few Wegen Bluegrass picks which sound very similar but...

    Re: Gibson A-9 information wanted

You get used to the lack of dots pretty quickly and as a result you look at the fretboard less.

I think it was an aesthetic choice more than anything. The whole minimalist vibe and all.

    Re: Gibson A-9 information wanted

I can only speak for mine which is a 2002 and it is an amazing instrument. I play a diversity of styles from blues to celtic to bluegrass and it always seems to have the tone I want. It sounds...
  15. Re: The low-end whomp, or woof sound on some mandolins...

I have a Gibson A9 that definitely has that woof A vs F should make no difference as it is the sound chamber.not the scroll that makes the difference. The best woof I have heard
    is from a Muth...

    Re: Mandolin Makes you Smarterer

I must have been really stupid when I was younger because I play a lot and am still not as smart as my non musical wife.... But I also play the banjo.... Working at cross purposes.

    Re: Pick thickness.

I am using the prime tone picks in 1.0, 1.3 and 1.5 in addition to the wegen bg140. The difference between the 1.0 and the 1.3 is significant in terms of sound. But the 1.3 & 1.5 sound virtually...

Re: Using a metronone for speed

I notice the same thing. I think once you can play a few tunes/scales at a certain speed its easier to scale up as it were a tune that you only play at slow tempos. The slow tempo really forces you...

Re: Using a metronone for speed

Play the tune very slowly (1 click per quarter note) and quietly until you get it perfect then speed it up until you start to make mistakes then back off a bit until you play it perfectly at a higher...
  22. Re: Other's Ferns

I always find it funny that almost all the mandolins you see at a BG jam look essentially the same, all slight variations on a theme. I applaud any builder who breaks the mold and tries something...

Re: CT55 - lovely tone but not loud enough!

I personally don't really like the BC picks, they sound too similar to a straight ultrex to justify the price for me. But the primetones...oh the primetones.

    I use pointed triangles a 1.3 and...

    Re: Knowing is hearing

I always bring an instrument I am familiar with when I try out instruments at a music store for this reason. I am familiar with my own instruments so I can gauge how the music store sounds like.
