    Re: Random mandolin sightings

This surprised me even more than my earlier mandolin mural sighting - I found this today on Michel Loiselle's "Gargoyles on Parliament Hill" webpage...

    The official Canadian Parliament Peace...

Well, since you asked... :)) :)

5-string banjos: oldtime (clawhammer mostly, a little frailing, no bluegrass).

    Re: Notation Software?

Well, for what it's worth, my tutorial of Musescore 2.1 basics, attempts to get right to the point, showing how to write a simple melody - these are the basics I use for writing fiddle tunes and...
  4. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

Yep. :mandosmiley: Electric anything is great for my aged arthritic fingers (after many decades of playing strictly acoustic-only everything).

    Super-light-gauge electric single strings that...

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

Today I was surprised to see a mandolin/mandola/pear-shaped instrument in a giant two-story-tall mural :disbelief:  painted on the side of a building in Aberdeen WA. At first I couldn't tell...

    Re: Need some advice.

Interesting! Not my type of music either, but they seem to have done alright with it, they seem to be very capable musicians. (I wouldn't be able to play all those way up high on the neck...
  7. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

:)) Yeah... and back when those things were current and unavoidable in the major publications, it seemed like time stopped and dragged on forever. :sleepy: I was glad to see those bright colors go...
  8. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Late '90s, actually. :) "Bondi Blue" iMac (middle pic) came out in 1998, fruit colors (top pic) were announced in early 1999 (more info here). But that minor detail aside, I see your point! :) :))...

Sticky: Re: Thread for Social Group MP3 posting

Disregard my link above, wrong thread. Updated to my tentative experimental (read: probably contains errors) :)) chord-exploration video also at Song-A-Week 500 - Westphalia Waltz.
  11. Re: “Never grow old” bluegrass instrumental

Super nice!! :mandosmiley: And that song is one of my all-time favorites too, thus I often have unrealistically high expectations for any new versions of it, but your band does a great job with it....

Yep. :mandosmiley: Solid-body instrument, especially, IMO absolutely the best thing ever for preserving household (and neighbors') peace and tranquility. Also you can hear yourself play a lot better,...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

I basically had in mind for commonly-seen minors to be included in the "etc" portion of my "I-IV-V etc" phrase, but yeah I agree with you that sometimes the most-obvious first choice isn't...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

As to writing down the notes that form chords - I was not referring to the I-IV-V etc chords, which (at this point, for me anyway) are fairly obvious just by listening - no need to diagram those out...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

Good points. :) The other fun & potentially useful thing with being able to write stuff down (and have other people read it), is that it's an easier way work out new multi-part harmonies and such......

    Re: Mandolin orange tab search?

Mandolin tab? OP wants mandolin tab. I can't find any - just testing this out, I found a few guitar tab pages, and plenty of lyrics/chordname pages, but no mandolin tab, despite trying various...

    Re: Mandolin Influences

My dad played, there was always a mandolin in the house.

He did tremolo stuff playing old Texas/German waltzes and dance tunes, and simplified versions of Chopin etc waltzes that he'd learned by...
  20. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

U.S. didn't dive into WWII whole-hog until late in 1941. Then things ramped up for the war effort.

That is relevant since Gibson is a U.S. company and, in 1939 AFAIK there was *not* yet any...

  22. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Oh. Darn! I didn't know that. I guess I should have done a little research before typing out my little parody... I was just kinda thinking out loud... oops. Thanks Mike for the heads-up! :)
  23. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Maybe Gibson should trademark the word "The", while they're at it.

I mean, look, there's all these other non-authentic builders putting the word "The" on the headstocks. They have no right to...
  24. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Ah, I see now, I'd wondered about that. (I hadn't heard of that film before.) Thanks! :)
