  1. Re: Do you know of an easy, safe program to convert wav files to

You need to get LAME, another bit of freeware that plugs into Audacity. When I first got Audacity many years ago there was a link for LAME.

Re: Cool Stuff to Watch When not Playing

Seen some of those - just watched the DVD of "The Last Waltz" again recently. I'll check out the other suggestions, thanks!

I have the audio out from my TV optically coupled to my old stereo...

Cool Stuff to Watch When not Playing

Fortunately I'm an essential worker so I'm still going to work at the power plant.

But there's not a lot to do in my down time with no festivals, shows or jams. So I've been streaming shows on...

    Re: Which mandolin to buy

Most places in the states are the same - mandolin deserts. Unless you go to Nashville, NYC, Elderly's and a few other places you won't find anything to try at most music stores.

    The best place to...

    Re: Which mandolin to buy

I'm in the Morris camp. My first good mandolin was a Sonny Morris hybrid F4 (oval hole with an elevated fretboard, 14th fret body join, single transverse brace).
With monel strings it just sings on...

    Re: Speed neck recommendation

To me a speed neck means no finish at all other than maybe a stain for coloring. I apply a thin coat of tung or boiled linseed oil with a soft, lint-free rag. Leave it on up to an hour, then wipe...

    Re: Pickup Suggestions Please

I've installed the twin head JJB PPS 220 in everything from fiddles to all mando family instruments, banjos, resonators, guitars and double bass. Works fine in all applications I've tried. On a pin...
  9. Re: Quality of Harley Benton vs Eastwood/Revelation?

Dave - its likely nut slot depth, angle, or both that is causing poor intonation on the lower frets.

Re: Are People Buying Less Mandolins Now?

I'm sure there are multiple market forces at play

    1. Lots of people are stuck at home, some are taking up new hobbies including mandolin
    2. Lots of people are out of work, so they're cutting...

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

I dislike any pick noise or click. Any pick flex can lead to a flapping sound. I find on mando family instruments around 2 mm gives me good stiffness and is comfortable to hold.

    Tone is the most...

Re: Chords for "When Summer Ends"

The original song is on Silly Wizard's "A Glint of Silver" album. They do it in D I believe, but I transposed it to G for mandolin. In G, the first note of the melody is D (5th fret on A) so that...

    Re: Pickup Suggestions Please

Passive volume pots, even with an audio taper, do not work near as well as a volume control after the preamp. For years I used this K&K Pure preamp for gigs. Gives you eq and volume controls close...

    Re: Boozy impulse purchase

Cool electric mando! The Almuse pickups are great. When I got my Mandobird VIII some years back I upgraded the pickup and the bridge (Almuse, Moongazer) and its been great fun.

    Re: Resonators

I also recommend me of the 30's era Regal/Dobro models. I was given one a few years back. It needed a little work to fix the intonation.

I followed Allen's advice/caution about soft wood neck...

    Re: Humidifying problems

What case do you have? It may, in essence, not be able to hold in water vapor. Unless you have a case with a good tight metal seal all around you're humidifying the room the case is in as the water...
  18. Re: Time for a New Tapastring Vintage Jack Thread?

No need to worry about putty melting in the sun. I’ve installed these pickups with putty in over 20 instruments. I play bluegrass festivals and farmers markets in temperatures ranging to 100 F,...

    Re: Newbie Here

Yes mandolins are harder to fret than guitars. Dual string, higher tension, shorter scale length courses and a narrower neck with less room for your fingers cause this. Add to this your Ibanez was...

Re: Last Mando standing, How to choose?

  21. Re: Eastman El Rey vs acoustic mandolin with pickup

Re: where might one acquire a Mandocello?

Low frequency instruments are like car and motorcycle engines - there's no replacement for displacement. That said, here are a few of my observations:

Re: where might one acquire a Mandocello?

Speaking of guitar conversions, my Eastman MDC 805 is essentially a guitar with two extra tuners and a tailpiece, bridge and nut made for 8 strings.

There are many folks here who have converted...

  25. Time for a New Tapastring Vintage Jack Thread?

Before the COVID hit the fan, I bought a sweet barely used 2017 Martin HD28. Like most all my other instruments I wanted to add an internal pickup. Unlike all the others I didn't want to drill into...
