    Re: Atlanta Mandolin Luthiers

Of course you have to use an oval hole for beer. F hole mandolins are for wine.

Re: Mini Tele Conversion to Five-String

I do want to tune it as a mandola, but with a fifth string tuned to high e. It's going to be tough, I suspect, with a 16.3" scale.

I'll probably replace the bridge plate to a through-body model,...

Re: Mini Tele Conversion to Five-String

Did you ever try it? Looks like this scale is about an inch and a half too long for what I'm thinking.

Scotter, did you ever get around to trying this? I'd be interested to hear how it worked out.

Re: Mini Tele Conversion to Five-String

Great. I really appreciate that feedback.

My intention was to tune this up like a mandola with a high e, but I'm worried I won't be able to get there on a 16.3" scale.

Re: Mini Tele Conversion to Five-String

That's extremely helpful, thank you. The mini-T comes with an ashtray bridge with barrel saddles, but this would allow conversion to rectangular saddles. You don't have any problems with your action...

    Mini Tele Conversion to Five-String

I've had this crazy idea rattling around in my head for a while, and I can't shake it, so I might have to just go for it.

StewMac has their Mini T-style kit in stock at a great price right now....

Re: Help - Monroe's Kentucky Mandolin

Wow! I really appreciate that. Yeah, it's quite different from what he's teaching. I'll try to work through these tabs this week. I usually work by ear, but this gives me a great foundation.

    Help - Monroe's Kentucky Mandolin

Anybody have a link to a good video lesson for this song? Or have you recorded one?

I've been using this the last few days, and I think I've gotten the A part down pretty well, even if I'm still...

    Re: Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

Strings and Julin do a really nice, sort of long, rather simple version of this tune that I used to learn the basics.

That's a real beauty, Marty. Hate to hear it might be the last of its kind, but I'm glad it sounds like you've got some really interesting projects on deck.

He's saying Marty is "in Marietta if I recall correctly".

Barry Kratzer, though, is near Savannah.

Re: New Morris Flattop has arrived. String question.

New A's and E's frequently sound muted to my ears, for what it's worth.

I have one exactly like this, actually. Everybody's happier when I'm not playing it.

    Re: Dirty old town tab

I taught myself this song, on a whim, last week. I'll have to sit down and pick it to be sure, but this tab takes a few odd turns I wouldn't think to take. That's not to say they're wrong,...

    Re: Real Wear not Distressing

Sam Bush goes way up the neck with his pick. Wouldn't be surprised to see facial wear on the scroll after a lot of that kind of play, resting the base of the thumb there to pivot.
