  1. “one announcement we're privy to that will rock the industry”

The Mandolin Cafe administrator teased with this line before the NAMM show. I must confess my apparent ignorance for not seeing how the finally released info was anything that would “rock the...

Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

Yes, I’ve seen good mandolin players use capos for that purpose. I even have a capo in my mandolin case for just such a need but haven’t used it yet. :)

Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

I’ve heard of musicians tuning their instruments down for the feeling of floppier strings.

Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

Well, sort of, lol. If you like using open strings and drones on your mandolin, then D is not equal to E-flat. :)

Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

Fortunately I haven't had to deal with any musicians like that. What keys does he play in? I suppose you could tune down a half-step yourself? Otherwise just embrace up-the-neck closed-position...

    Re: BG jam

I can’t see that it would make a lot of difference sonically. With either guitar tuning or mando tuning you’ll have some keys that are easy with plenty of open strings and some that will be mostly...

    Re: The Obvious 12/26 Question

Not quite a “mandolin,” but I got a mandola (my first mandola). I like it but I’m currently in the middle of a clawhammer banjo binge so everything else including the new mandola is getting...

    Re: upgrade thoughts

Yep, though that low a price would have me looking for the catch. $2k or a bit under seem pretty standard for MT’s in good shape.
  10. Re: Pianist and uke player looks for mandolin

I play an MD315 and like it a lot - loud woody sound with strong clear trebles, plays easily up and down the fretboard. I was ready and willing to buy a higher priced model but preferred this model....

    Re: ToneGuard Question

It isn't true that ALL the old school players wear their strap over their right shoulder. I've seen old pics (predating Monroe's fame) of mandolin players with the strap over their left shoulder, and...

    Re: NF Big Mon Specials

They sure are pretty! I too am interested in hearing thoughts and opinions by anybody who has played the two Big Mon Artist models as well as the regular Big Mon.

Yep, mine came in the same type of case.
  14. Re: Amateurish string change execution - can I keep, or is it rui

Hang in there. String changes get easier with just a little practice. I personally enjoy my string changes, as it gives me a half hour to admire my mandolin and give it a little extra cleaning in...

    Re: Eastman MDA315 mandola! Yes!

I'd like to try an 800 series mandola to see how it compares to the MDA315. I played an 800 series f-body Eastman mandolin this summer (MD815V) and loved it. The 815V was the best I've played of the...

    Re: upgrade thoughts

With the last few mandolins I've bought, I've been amazed at just at how much difference the choice of strings and picks makes on the sound from a particular instrument. That makes it really...
  17. Re: A tuner shootout: TC Electronic Unitune vs. Peterson StroboCl

I use my pick when tuning with my Stroboclip HD and don't seem to have any issues. The way I tune might actually be difficult with the thumb (or thumb nail) - I play one string of a course and bring...

Re: Prettiest A model I have seen in a while

Wow, the headstock inlay is gorgeous. I was surprised that the wood on the back and sides seemed sort of ho-hum. (I'm afraid I may have been looking at too many lush Collings backs and sides, lol.)

    Re: Northfield love

Congrats on your new mandolin! I’m pretty sure I want an NF5S or a Big Mon but am hoping to get in a trip to Carters to compare other mandolins before deciding.

    Re: Eastman MDA315 mandola! Yes!

After recently hearing and and reading a few other folks (including one pro) say that they use a capo on their mandola, I tried my banjo capo on my mandola. At least short term, a capo on the...

Re: Leather straps: flat or braided?

The mandolin is light enough that most any strap that I've tried has been comfortable for me (even a leather boot lace). After buying and using about 20 mandolin straps over the years, my current...
