    Re: Gold Tone TG-18

I dunno the scientific explanation, but I learned to play guitar in 4ths with the fret marker at the 9th, then learned mandolin in 5ths with a fret marker at the 10th and find whenever I play mando...

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

If you could get it cheap enough it could be a fixer-upper, but you have to be real going into it.

    FWIW here's something I recorded with mine. It's a bed-track for a tune I'm working on, so a bit...

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

To keep this in context, I believe they sold new for $450 with a nice case. I got mine for a third of that and it was NIB. After the upgrades and years of playing fun I sold it for almost twice the...

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

The cone sits on a metal shelf that attaches to the rim and pretty much fills the cavity. If by miracle the bullet spared the cone, the rim is certainly damaged. You could probably see inside through...

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

You should also take a good look at the internal damage caused by the bullet. It has definitely compromised the rim and a good chance it has damaged the cone. Rim is fixable and cone replaceable but...

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

I had a Republic Mandolian like that. Getting a good set up is critical. Those have an adjustable truss-rod but it's questionable as-to whether mine actually worked or not. Didn't matter since it was...

Re: Eastman El Rey 'weak E pickup' hack

There was quite a bit of noise about this issue when the mandolin was first released - basically its only design flaw.

For the sake of a few screws Lollar could easily provide adjustable...
  8. Re: Will being a lefty, but playing right handed be more limiting

Use it to your benefit. A mandolin is an upside-down guitar. Think of it that way and the patterns carry over, except for the high B and E.
  9. Re: Will being a lefty, but playing right handed be more limiting

Also a lefty playing righty. Came from necessity - only lefty of 6 kids and the others are all righties.

Once you get into playing finger-style and jazz guitar the complexities required by both...
  10. Re: 4-String, Solid Body Electric Mandolin Options

You can always string an 8 as a 4 if need be.

I have a Fender 5-string that I use on the run. It's a semi-hollow so it's light but built as an electric so has just enough volume for working on...

    Re: Fender mandolin and amp

Sorta kinda. I play my hot-rodded Fender 5-string through a Takt amp. It's vintage 60's MIJ point-to-point tube amp voiced like a 6V6/Champ. Pushes between 2 and 3 watts through an Alnico 6" driver....

    Re: Gold Tone TG-18

Tenors have a history of being tuned in 4th (9th fret) and 5th (10th fret) so they come either way. A lot of guitar players prefer Chicago tuning DGBE tenors as it's the top strings on a guitar so it...

    Nice.

I have a GR-33 and a couple guitars with pickups but nothing tuned in 5ths.

    Re: Today's favorite stomp box...

My fave pedal for eMando is my Pigtronix Envelope Phaser. I can get mine to sound like a trumpet!

I like a bit of delay and reverb under the tone then build from there.
  17. Re: Remember that $199 MK mandolin from years ago?

As a matter of fact I was playing mine this morning thinking what a wonderful instrument it is, and such a good deal (thanks Mike). Lots of volume and crisp "snap" but with body. Great neck, tuning...
  18. Re: Epiphone MM-30: Should I Improve It, Or Upgrade?

From the pic all that seems to need is a fret level and dress, part of a routine setup procedure.

If you can spring for a better instrument, by all means, but you'll always need a beater and this...
  19. Re: Gig or inexpensive case for Ibanez tenor guitar

Check out the Harley Benton first. It's the same design but has a solid sitka spruce top. The Ibanez is plywood.

    Re: Eastwood Rickenbacker

It's somewhat ironic that guitar players complain about how skinny Ric guitar necks [12 string in particular] are while mando players complain about how wide their mando necks are.

Re: Mando vs. Mandola for swing jazz

Mandola is in the tenor tuning range - tenor banjo and mandola are tuned the same - so that sound has a long history in jazz.

I agree with the 5-string suggestion. Mandola and mandolin tuning in...

Poll: Re: Thoughts on electric practice instrument

    I have a Fender 5-string emando that's a 4 with a low C (or a tenor with a high E). It's built like a thinline Tele so as a semi-hollow it doesn't have much acoustic volume.

    Primary difference...

Re: another Republic Highway 49 coming

I had a Republic Mandolian for the longest time. As well made as any of them but it did need a serious setup and a new biscuit bridge. The one that came was a soft wood so my luthier made one with...
  25. Re: New Kentucky KM-606 mandolins are in the wild!

You make good points. AFAIK the LM600 is The Loar's rendition of what Lloyd was signing back in the 1920s. While I've not tried one of those I do have a LH-300-VS archtop guitar of theirs that is...
