    Re: Waxing the mandolin

"Hey, I waxed my mandolin while I was changing the strings I've had on there for 6 years. It sounds so much better now! I think I'll wax my mandolin every time I change strings!"

    Re: Headstock question

You actually can calculate the volume of an object in Maya, then multiply by the density to get the mass.
Guess I can't post links anymore? Forums dot autodesk dot com then...

    Re: Headstock question

Do you have CAD software? You can model these up quickly, plug in the density values for the woods you're using, and get the weight calculated for you automagically. If you don't, I highly recommend...
  4. Re: Carter Vintage Guitars is now Carter Vintage Exchange

That's probably true. However, my generation didn't grow up with name brands. We grew up with knockoffs and MP3's of Nirvana songs. Even my rich kid friends didn't have "real" Strats, they had...

    Re: less heavy tuners

Tie a helium balloon to the mandolin headstock. Problem solved.

    Re: Bourgeois M5A Mandolin

"Waverly Golden Age" tuners... this whole thing is a bunch of branding fun. I'm not saying they aren't decent mandolins. But leveraging brand recognition to the max. This reminds me of the Abarth 124...
  9. Re: What’s the nicest mandolin you’ve ever seen?

Nice, I'd love to own one. Those are from 2014.

Thanks for the kind words. I have a ton of crazy ideas I can't wait to try out, as soon as I extricate myself between the current rock and hard...
  10. Re: What’s the nicest mandolin you’ve ever seen?

In this one 10-foot area, two of Stefan Passernig's fantastic mandolins, a Mowry F-5, and a Mowry A-style f-hole mandola. The guys are pretty great, too.

Here you go. Same mics, same processing (none) into Audacity.

  12. Re: Bondhus Screw Grab for stripped screw heads

Bondhus makes good stuff. They wouldn't sell a gimmick or garbage. Interesting product. I suspect it's primarily for socket-head screws, which is their primary product line. It should work basically...

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

Fun fact - the definition of a "microphone" is a diaphragm, the movement of which is sensed by a transducer.
In this case, the pickup (whether piezo or magnetic) is the transducer, and the mandolin...
  14. Re: Dark trails appeared on the neck of my mandolin

Could be. Maybe "resin" is the better term for what I was describing, but in my field, that means "something that polymerizes", so that's not how I think of it.
    Anyway, "tree stuff" definitely moves...
  15. Re: Dark trails appeared on the neck of my mandolin

I also think this is sap. Seasonal changes cause resins to move around. If it were sanded flush with the surface of the neck, and has now diffused into the surrounding wood, it could certainly make a...

    Re: an aesthetic question

I think black tuners look great on these. And the rosewood will look more in keeping with the natural, no-frills aesthetic.

    Re: Reset bowlback mandolin neck

What's the value of the mandolin? I'm assuming this mandolin isn't worth a $1000 repair/restoration, except for value-in-use. I think the most cost-effective option would be to remove the fretboard...

Re: Bass Builder Undertakes Mandola Build

Yep, I've shipped redwood mandolins nearly 8mm thick in the center. The whole "redwood mandolins sound great but don't develop over time, may wear out or cave in over time" myth is based on people...
  20. Re: Weber Bridge - nut spinning, unable to raise/lower

If you're in a pinch and need to raise the bridge, you could put a piece of wood the right height to prop up the bridge, temporarily making it non-adjustable. There will be an impact on tone and...

    Re: IV F5 kit

Honestly, I'd say build your first mandolin with no binding. It doesn't change the tone, and it is huge learning curve in and of itself.
I spent 400 hours on my second mandolin making it look nice,...

Re: Crushed stone for headstock inlay?

Recon stone is a good option. Or something like Inlace, though I think it ends up having a "Woodcraft Store Demo from the 90's" vibe.

Filling a cavity with crushed/filler inlay is actually harder...

Re: Mandocello Strings on Tenor Guitar

You can do that. Whatever strings you use, it's worth running them through a string tension calculator real quick to make sure that you aren't putting more than ~10% more tension on the instrument...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

Still sitting there while my teenagers laugh at me when I try to coach them about persistence and grit.

My CNC machine died, so that turned into a year-long project and rebuild. It's pretty nice...
