Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

Yessir. That's what makes this so tricky as you suggest. We'll tend to see that detail on MA mandolins almost uniquely but not every one has it.

Makes me wonder about who directing that traffic...
  2. Re: Any information on this Carlo Lorenzo bowl back mandolin?

From the few pictures you've provided, your mandolin appears to be in fairly good cosmetic condition for its age.
Has it been kept in a case?

While the Carlo Lorenzo label suggests an address in...

Re: Italian Mandolin music being forgotten ???

I may be due for some clarification here, Eug.

I've got Federica's book as well, and if I'm not mistaken her expertise is in traditional Italian dances, which I understand differently from how...

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

Right now, the "Bowlbacks of Note" thread here might be the best repository on bowl back mandolins available. While it is heavy on Italian mandolins, there have been many discussions of American...

    Re: Sorting out the Vinaccias

Super strange and interesting, Victor. Thanks for posting this.

About 20 years newer than any Vinaccia I've seen.

It's interesting that the label boasts of a prize from the 1950 esposizione. ...

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

That neck / headstock detail is one of the markers I look for when thinking Vega, Mike, but the bridge position is the real smoking gun.

I don't think this was made by Vega but maybe from among...

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

Vega was on my mind about this, too, from the look of the rear neck to headstock transition. That little scoop profile shows up often, though not exclusively.
I missed seeing it at first.

    It is...

    That's what I know..

    Re: Harmony Monterey H410 Rescue

I'll try to give off my best Sopranos "Oh Ho!".

I think we're going to need a little more insight into 'slipping the block' (sounds like a means to get out of some cement overcoat....)

    This...

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

Ha! Thanks, Mike. I think in my case it's a gift of blarney.....

But I think you and Allen are on it with a Midwest attribution. I have a couple of bowldolas, neither of which are labeled but...

Thanks for linking this over to Sheri's thread, Scott.

  13. Re: Italian mandolin magazines: Il Plettro and Vita Mandolinistic

Incredible find, Martin! Thank you for sharing.
    Great summer reading.

The ads themselves will prove to be very very informative in their own right.

So, you know I had a lot of work planned...
  14. Re: Fry’s Mandolin (L. Ricca employees) ???

Your comment about "200 employees" got me thinking.
I think I was just being lazy and thought I'd punch in "Ricca Piano" again and see what turned up.
It's a task to keep that many people busy...
  15. Re: Fry’s Mandolin (L. Ricca employees) ???

Not to create a diversion, but I've never looked into the Ricca family's piano dealings before. Perhaps it has been discussed here?

I found this informative (if accurate) little bit:

    "Ricca...

    Re: "The Great Mandolins" postcards

Nice to see that Washburn bowlback included among the 'greats'!

I wish these had been on cereal boxes or the old school cafeteria milk cartons where I learned the Presidents.

  18. Re: Fry’s Mandolin (L. Ricca employees) ???

Thanks, Jed. That is super interesting.

There are numerous discussions here concerning Luigi Ricca's mandolins and operations. IIRC he was also involved in the piano business to some...

  22. Re: Interesting Sound Hole Decoration- Bowlback

I tend to associate these exuberant picturesque scratchplates with Catanese mandolins, but this one doesn't seem Sicilian to me.
