Re: Andy Statman Bought A Loar F5!

    #75320, of that coveted, non-Virzi Feb. 18th '24 batch.

Dan, in case you end up planning to reconstructing the pick guard, pm me for information on the source for the material.

Re: Lyon & Healy mandolin scales

Although L & H may not have copied Gibson construction, I found it interesting to see that a ca. 1920 long scale Style C had a top thickness quite similar to several Loar F5s I also measured (with...
  5. Re: Vintage Bridge Placement - Wrong from the start?

Be careful, "those old vintage Gibson tuning" machines (Waverly actually) work perfectly well on my two vintage Gibsons. Just sayin' :)
  6. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

Sounds familiar, Olaf. My dad's old man played folk songs and other music on the accordion, guitar and mandolin (a tater bug, I happened to find in my dad's closet in the late '60s). Right after WWI...
  7. Re: Vintage Bridge Placement - Wrong from the start?

Jass, please allow to suggest to never trust the "original" bridge position. A mandolin may have been set up incorrectly from scratch, but may just as well have changed/moved a bit from the permanent...

    Re: Unsigned Loar on Reveb

Thanks for your explanation, Darryl. Please allow for commenting on your statement "However, in my opinion, his all inclusive statement that serial numbers were assigned when shipped does not meet...

    Re: Unsigned Loar on Reveb

What Bill Smith said. "Unsigned Loars" have a Loar FON, which is, I believe, in all cases 11985. And that FON is from 1923 (!), rather than 1924 according to Spann. As the FON is normally covered by...

Re: Strings for an F4 - Medium Okay?

My 1923 F4 sounds wonderfully bright and piercing, which is not all too common in F4s AFAIK. D'Addario monels medium (EJM 74; I exchange the .015 A strings for .016) sound somewhat mellow and work...

Re: Worm under, Worm over? A visual guide.

Those tuners are only moderately modern, as they are from pre-2005, when Stew-Mac changed the plate design and width (to the vintage 16.4 mms). And, of course, the five screw holes and the modern...

Re: aria pro ll model pm1000 mandolin

My first F-style mandolin was an Aria Pro II. Fine beginner mandolin with nice Gibson-style MOP. One early '70s Aria model had a flower pot head stock inlay, mine (from '78 or '79) didn't. Not sure...

Re: Gibson F2 and F4 mandolins.

Paul, IMHO, have it set up, have the bridge top checked (as the a-strings spacing is off) and go for it.
The original tuners should have been round end worm-over tuners. (Still with the mando?)...

    Re: Jimmy Gaudreaua

Jimmy is a fine fellow and a super player. Didn't he go for a mandolin made by Jack O' Brian, while selling his Fern to John Paganoni?

Re: Gibson F2 and F4 mandolins.

FYI, the F4 on Jimmy's recordings is mostly his own, which he bought at some point for his then brother-in-law, tenor singer Paul Williams to use. I believe, Jimmy still owned it until his passing....
  18. Re: Virzi inquiry - Models offered? Tonal effect?

I'd suggest not to be all too enthusiastic about A432. My personal 1924 F5 sounds just fine on either A440 or 432. As our highly respected MC member Roger Siminoff suggests (without giving a source,...

    Re: Gibson A3 number 74336

Probably not, and it may not even have a slimmer neck. The serial number points to a 1924 shipping date. But we don't know the FON, which may well be from before slimmer neck/snake head time. A truss...
  20. Re: Musiccompo in Hong Kong Carbon Fiber mandolin cases

Interesting, thanks for the info. I came to my conclusion by (alternatively;)) trying to put a vintage Loar-signed F5 and two recent Gibson Master Models into my Musiccompo case. The instruments did,...

I started a thread on those cases about a year ago:https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/128115-Music-Compo-Cases
I own one of those. Of course, they are...

    Re: Blonde Loars ?

The F5 in question should be ser.-# 81626, shipped in '27 according to Spann. That mandolin has a non-original neck and non-original (worm over) tuners, most likely redrilled. There are no F5s made...

    Re: Mike Marshall's Loar?

Absolutely correct. Mike and I talked about the subject several times. The mid range portion Mike is so fond of in his "antique" (and the Northfields) he sometimes refers to as "bone structure".

    Re: Mike Marshall's Loar?

I played Mike's Loar several times in quiet situations (e. g. at my home) switching back and forth between his Loar, a couple of recent MM Gibsons and another Loar at hand. While Mike is a fantastic...
