    Re: Case for Eastman MD315?

Golden Gate, TKL, Crossrock, and Gator all make very serviceable and affordable cases. I havenít looked into the price of an Eastman fiberglass case recently, but theyíre well regarded as well. I...

    Re: Mandolin 'dogs'?

My first guitar was a Guild factory second D-40 with a nicely done sunburst. Had I realized at the time it was made the first year Fender acquired the brand I probably would have passed. But, I got...

Lol, I’ll admit to being a little excited...until I expanded the photo...that really is turrible (to me, no offense to those of you who may dig it)...

    Re: Classified etiquette

I agree, Don. The “ghosting” thing has even bled over to younger applicants for jobs. I’ve always felt like I never wanted to burn any bridges unnecessarily. You just never know when being respectful...

Re: Setting intonation on octave mandolin

+1 on the EJ 72s for the 20 inch scale. I use them on my Weber Bitterroot OM and they dramatically improve the G string floppiness and tendency to bend out of tune that you mentioned.

    Agree, too...

  9. Re: What can you tell me about the Gretsch New Yorker?

Since the Gretsch is well set up it wonít hamper your progression and is perfectly acceptable as a starter (and later ďbeaterĒ when you upgrade). The Gretsch mandolins from recent years are similar...

    Re: Waiting for mandolin setup?

Get the included set up, but know that you may have to raise the bridge in a couple weeks depending on how vigilant you are with the humidifier. I gave an old Kentucky F style to a friend’s son a...
  13. Re: Small hands and neck width - instruments that fit/don't

Eastmans also have narrower nut widths (1 and 3/32 if I recall correctly). Iíve played a couple of their 504s that were really good mandolins. Of course, Jimís recommendations for more expensive...

  15. Re: Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz -Back to Boston/Salt

Yes, thanks! It was cool to watch the 3 from Carterís and get the different tone qualities of each mandolin, and what she pulled out of them. That 30s Gibson is sweet, but I see why Sammy gave his a...
  16. Re: Some questions about optional features on mandolins:

I like a wide neck mandolin, because I don’t have to worry about muting adjacent strings when I’m playing. I thought 1 and 1/8 was my sweet spot until I bought my Rigel, and, man, I’m digging the 1...

Sadly, no, they closed their doors. You can still find them used, but they chose to pursue other options at least 2 years ago, maybe longer.

Re: Need help identifying Gibson Loar era mandolin

That has the potential to be an awesome mandolin with a wonderful family heritage!

  23. Re: Low-cost cases/gigbags that FIT WELL for an Eastman 315

Gatorís oblong hard shell case fits well and offers bettrthan gig bag crush protection. I like Travelite and the Gator similar style case. Mike Marshall carries his Loar in a Travelite.

    Iím...

    Re: Upgrading mandolin

    Yep, what they said.

I used to own an Eastman 315 that was my “beater,” but it was nice enough that I treated it just as carefully as my nicer mandolins. It’s tone wasn’t as complex as my Kelley...

Re: How long does it take?

Depends on the builder and how they like to work. Do they work in batches, and, if, how many per batch? Do they do everything with hand tools or is there some CNC involved? Full time gig, or spare...
