Re: Anyone seen an Eastman El Rey?

Never heard of it. Just Googled it. My humble:

    - Nice looking.
    - Why did they name it after Tito Puente?

    Re: Blue Chips

I loose my keys too often for that to help.
  4. Re: To the multi instrumentalists: which instrument is your no. 1

    Hey, Teddy -

Folk guitar for about fifty-one years, electric for almost that long, squareneck reso for about twelve, mando for maybe six or eight. El Primero is a flattop dread, a modded '76 Guild...

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

    Mission accomplished. Congrats!

Now excuse me while I Google Alden Mandocaster and see what you're in for . . . .

Re: How thick of a pick?

I'm fussier with guitar picks than mando picks. For mando, give me a guitar pick of from one to two millimeters and I'm happy.

    Re: tone guard

For the same reason that cars don't come equipped with studded snow tires and bicycles don't come equipped with bells. Lots of folks think they're important, lots of folks don't.

    Either way,...

Re: keeping the mando off your stomach

Because it's $75 for a few little pieces of stuck-together steel rod.

Re: keeping the mando off your stomach

It's harder to hold a mando away from your stomach than to hold a guitar away. That's because with mando, your left wrist is supposed to jut left, violin-style, instead of angled straight to your...

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

It might just be me, but I can't see spending two or three grand on a practice instrument.

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

Hm. I don't see any solid-body mandos on the Crafter website.

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

There are several solid-bodies at www.reverb.com for well under $500. For your purposes, they should all be fine.

You might end up getting a setup locally, but that shouldn't discourage you.

Re: In case or on stand?

    It depends.

At home and gigs, it's usually on a stand.

Going from one place to another, it's usually in its case.

When I'm playing it, it's in my hands.

The last time it was on a wall...
  16. Re: What's the right tailpiece and finish?

Oh! Glad I asked. It looks great, too. That's what I'll get.

UPDATE: Found one and ordered it. Thanks!
  17. What's the right tailpiece and finish?

    Hey!

I'm ordering parts for an old Gibson Junior oval A and am thinking of getting a tailpiece that says Gibson on it: Prucha tailpiece

    - Would that be pretty much like what was on the mando...
  18. Re: Grover? Gotoh? Schaller? Golden Age Mandolin Tuners?

I've used Grover, Gotoh, and Schaller, and they're all good. Each has its fans. Don't know anything about Golden Age except that it's a silly name.

    Re: Solo builders

I liked reading the suggestions above. Learned quite a bit.

The question has led me to two thoughts. Neither will be helpful to you, but at least they're helpful to me:

    Re: Strap recommendations?

Or: I have a guitar strap I made from an old cowboy belt that I—uh—outgrew. Hand-tooled and the whole bit, like an Eldorado. Speaking of which: El Dorado

    Re: Need mando advice

Morrises sound like a great twang for the buck. Nice prices for axes that get good reviews and are handmade in North America.

    That's the way I'd go—and get something fancier when I'm Ryman-ready.

Re: Portland, Maine Old Time Jam

Yeah. It's about three thousand miles from the real Portland, here in Maine. The one on the Left Coast is named after ours.

The two founders of the Oregon burg with the TV show flipped a coin to...
