Re: keeping the mando off your stomach

I'm not a ToneGuard fan, for the looks, weight and other reasons. However, it does to what it purports to do. I use a strap over the right shoulder (Monroe style) which orients the mandolin such...

Re: Why so many glossy finish mandos?

Glossy finishes are easier to clean and, or, are more resistant to revealing fingerprints than satin or matte finishes.

Re: Why so many glossy finish mandos?

A satin finish looks cheap in my opinion, in person up close. It looks like a half built instrument, like the builder ran out of funds or patience and said, "Let's just get this thing done and out of...

    Re: Gary Vessel F5 #94

I wish....that was taken while the wife and I were on vacation in Mendocino County.
I was practicing and set it there, and my wife saw it and took a pic.

    Gary Vessel F5 #94

Well I'll be..... just found out this great mandolin I own, is on the Grammy award winning Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper record "Tall Fiddler".
Builder is Gary Vessel. I bought this instrument...
  9. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

I’d say technique is 90% of the sound, maybe more. If you sound lousy on an Eastman, you’ll sound lousy on a Loar.

I’ll note you commented on stuff for your instrument but not on stuff in your...
  10. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

One opinion is to buy an instrument better than you are and that removes one of the variables from the equation, it's definitely you that needs to improve.

Re: Back to guitar after mandolin break

Long-time guitar player as well. Picked up mandolin a few years ago. I try to practice (play) both daily.

I do think that playing the mandolin has helped my guitar playing, and my ear in general.

Re: Does mandolin improve guitar technique

I’ve played acoustic guitar for many years, and the mandolin for six years or so. I feel the mandolin has definitely made me a better guitar player not only technically, but also in style. I’m not...

Re: Does mandolin improve guitar technique

I find that any instrument I am playing helps me with all the other instruments that I play . . . kind of like a cross-pollination of ideas, techniques and fresh approaches to an old style of playing.

    Re: The cafe....made my day!

I too initially won one of the hats - but then somebody on the Cafe' staff heard my mandolin playing and quickly decided to rescind my winnings . . . .

    Easy come, easy go.

    Congrats Scott!

  22. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

Are you really only changing strings once every three years?
Perhaps your mando has been quite due to dead strings.

Another thought, why did you take all the strings off? It works well, nay,...
