    Re: Mandolin as carry on?

Iíve traveled all over and not once had an issue. Iíd toss it in the Calton and not worry. Worst case scenario it takes up your leg room.

    Re: Solo builders

I'm not sure of Ruhland's current F5 prices, but I would think it would be under 6k new. I really can't recommend him enough. I have been playing my A5 he build a lot recently and it is a total...

    Re: Gary Vessel F5 #94

Oh ya, I saw that in the classifieds. Seemed like a good score. Vessel makes some killer Trad mandolins.
  4. Re: Playing with others of different skill levels

Keep playing with both and over time you will start gravitating toward the more advanced group, atleast that's how I progressed. I think it is important to take time to just listen and try to find...

    Re: Tone Dexter users?

Are you implying that everybody is going to get rid of their pre-amps and pickup'ed mandolins in favor of a Zeta mandolin? It will be nice to have that option, but I don't think it will have such an...

Resurrecting this old thread. Anybody catch the Bryan and Billy Strings stream from Station Inn last night. Bryan picked up an Ellis A mandolin a few times during the show.

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

I currently own a Duff, Kimble and Ruhland A. The Duff has been my main axe for a few years and people always remarked on how loud it is. The Ruhland is quite a bit louder than the Duff, like scary...

Re: What's The One That Got Away?

    Ya'll from Portland or something?

I got to noodle around on "Ella" the other night. Best Sullivan I have had the pleasure to play. Really great dry woody tones coming out of that one.
  14. Re: Jarrod Wlaker w/ Billy Strings - Paste Studio

Jarrod is indeed playing a Weinman. He has killer chops and can play any bluegrass style. He seems to get alot of his ideas from Sam Bush, including the leg rock/head bob.

I played a great torriefied MT down at fiddlers green last spring. Nice instruments.

  18. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

I have a an Adi topped Duff and Adi topped Heiden, both fantastic instruments by fantastic builders with plenty of power, volume and great tone. But, my loudest instrument by far is my Sitka topped...
  19. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

At that price point may as well fly to Nashville and play mandolins til you find the one you can't put down. Price wise that is not that much compared to how much you are investing in the instrument....

Thanks for posting! This podcast is great. I am already a few episodes in. I have wanted to get deeper into jazz as I have really only started to scratch the surface, so it is nice to have another...

Re: Please help! Fixing my pick direction

Doing that exercise daily will re-train your muscle memory. You can do the "ghost notes" but if that is too challening you can play a quarter note as 2 1/8 notes while you are re-training your hand....

    Re: Right hand cure-all exercise

Thanks Don. Yes, string crossings are obviously super important. When I first started doing this I would cross strings G-D, G-A, G-E, D-G, etc. But for me it was too tedious and to be honest not as...

    Right hand cure-all exercise

Here is the right hand cure-all exercise I use. (Not really a cure-all, but it covers some bases) I learned it from Zak Borden, a great teacher, and I am sure Mike Marshall does it in finger busters,...
