  1. Re: Why do L&H Model A, B, & C owners use TI mittels and not star

    Hi Tim,

I don't know where those gauges come from as TI don't print them on the packs. However, they do list string tensions at their official website:

  2. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

As many of you have stated, I have a box of picks collected through the years mainly just to try out based on recs from here or artists I like. I keep a couple of lighter/slimmer picks around to loan...
  3. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

I use the Dunlop Ultex, the standard flat pick (1.0mm) which has a symmetrical bevel all around.

Then again, I am not mainly a classical player. The shape allows a dark tone if I angle the pick,...
  4. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

I use "BlueChip TAD-1R 40". It has very smooth beveled edges and it maintains its shape for a very, very long time. In my experience about 1000 hours of playing and some more.

  5. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

Not sure which kind you'd call this. I like it broken in a bit, and not out-of-the-bag new186254.
  6. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

For me, it depends on the instrument. On my bowlbacks, I use a rounded edge nylon pick (I don't think you can put a meaningful bevel on nylon) and on my Gibson and Mid-Mo I use a 1mm Wegen pick with...
  7. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

    That's my choice!
  8. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

I donít consider myself a classical player, but I dabble a bit. Regardless of the style Iím playing I use 1.4 mm right hand beveled picks (BC CT-55 or Wegen TF 140), but my mandos presently are all...
  9. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

I use these most of the time, and the edges are not beveled:

  10. Poll: Re: Poll: do use use a bevel edge or round edge pick?

Even if I start with a knife like bevel, it pretty quickly wears to roundish. Different materials wear at different rates, but the end result is roughly the same. So long as the edges aren't...
  11. SILVIO RANIERI - Mandolinist, Conductor and Composer.

    Hi all,

I thought it would be interesting to post this 'sound-video' about the celebrated Mandolin virtuoso Silvio Ranieri (Rome, 1882 - 1956, Bruxelles) here.

It is a video of a...
  12. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

I use Dogals on every bowlback that I own that is worth playing. I was surprised when I strung up my Vega Style 3 with the dolce set. I took it to a rehearsal a bunch of years ago and it sounded as...

"Tim, you should have been here back in the day..." He says taking a puff of his corncob pipe. :)

There were many amazing musicians and classical players who checked in here regularly. Foremost...

Re: How much do you practice?

I've been a working musician for 40 years, and I still practice at least an hour every day -- not including the hours I play on bookings. The dexterity you earn from practicing can disappear in a...
  15. Re: Thomastik starks on an arch top for classical

I have used Thomastiks for some time for classical music on my 1922 Gibson A Junior and also on my 1930s Dobro resonator. In my opinion, they are outstanding, far better than anything else. They have...
  16. Re: August Watters - two books arrived today

Thanks to all who posted. Since there have been questions, Iíll give a bit more background on the two mandolin books.

The main goal of ďExploring Classical MandolinĒ is to introduce the music and...
  17. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

Hi Elbent! As another perspective, in my mandolin setup and repair business, I see about 50/50 men and women bringing instruments for me to adjust or fix. Maybe 30% under 40 years old, the majority...

Re: Help me identify this bowlback please!

Likely made by Lyon and Healy, but from one of their (many) other lines.

But not a Washburn. If it were....there would be a label saying it was and there would likely be a model number on the...

Re: How to enhance mando for legato piece

For Classical style playing, I would be using tremolo on all longer note values unless specifically notated as senza tremolo.

Any particular reason you want to avoid tremolo? German school that...

    New flat top mandolin

Recently completed flat top mandolin. I call it a "classical flattop" because it has a body shape and size the same as a Lyon and Healy style C. Top is red Spruce, back and sides are Black Heart...

    Re: One Mandolin - forever...

The maker is Century Strings. I emailed them about a case for this (as the one it came in was old and had seen better days) and they never got back to me.

I don’t know if that means they aren’t...

    Tim,
Here’s what I’ve noticed so far from owning it. It has a fuller tone across all strings and extremely well balanced.
