Re: Still considered an Irish Bouzouki?

Sorry, I guess I just don't buy into/care about the Irish-to-Greek, Sweeney's Men narrative... what I play is neither irish nor a bouzouki... not that there's anything wrong with those things. Seems...

Re: Using OM as a solo/accompaniment instrument?

Yes, very much so, although I'm not familiar with GDAE tuning (semi-typical GDAD tuning works great in that role).

Re: Still considered an Irish Bouzouki?

Call it whatever you like... If you don't play Irish music, 'Irish bouzouki' isn't a real fun thing to call your instrument, so I never have.

I had forgotten, another maker of high quality instruments is Fletcher Brock, fletcherbrock.com
  5. Re: Having difficulty getting contact with Stefan Sobell

I used to be a Sobell dealer and have worked with Stefan extensively over the years, although not recently. A more genuine, wry and gracious human being you will not find... I don't know what might...

  8. Re: Octave Mandolin Intonation Issues..a common problem?

When I used to work in the 'music industry' I was a dealer for these and they never had any notable intonation problems.

    Re: GDADA tuning for Cittern

I really like the look of this one, where you can see the whole sound hole. I thought others of this design had the fingerboard extending over the top of the sound hole.
  10. Re: Do you prefer unison or octave tuning sound on your Bouzouki

    Hi gerardo,

I am curious, what makes you say that a gG dD aa ee octave tuning is a traditional bouzouki tuning? Or do you mean octave mandolin?

I tend to like octave strings on my GDAD Sobell...

    Re: GDADA tuning for Cittern

    Hello Eddie,

I have toyed around with these possibilities on Sobells for some years. Sadly to say, your short scale instrument is just not well suited to a low D. I used to have a 24 inch scale...

    Re: GDADA tuning for Cittern

    Hi Nigel,

I used to use this tuning when I had a 5 course instrument, now it's GDAD on a 4 course.

    Re: Jack White

Taste and appropriateness would deter most people from discussing Punk music, Jack White, et al. at length in an ongoing 'old time mandolin' forum context. While one may reserve the right to not love...

He seems to not be threatened by the concept of ignoring mainstream music. The Doctor is such a scream, I wish he posted on here a lot more often. I really enjoy his ultra-dry, "no bull####" approach...

Wow, are we really mentioning both relevant and Jack White in regards to old-time mandolin! Too funny! I think the Flight of the Conchords use of the Casio electro-mandolin might be more relevant as...

I think Lady GaGa would be even more appropriate to discuss as an old-time mandolinist. I thought I saw a photo of her holding an A style, and rumor has it that there is some mandolin buried in "Bad...

    LOL.

Great Basque CD featuring the Alboka woodwind is "Leonen Orroak" with Ibon Koteron and the ubiquitous Kepa Junkera. He also released another one called Airea.

The band Alboka is good as...
