Re: Do I need a mandola?

I play mine as my main gigging instrument, then flip to mandolin for fiddle tunes. Lots of sonic fun!

Re: Tell Me About Playing Mandola Vs. Mandolin

My mandola/mandolin ratio is probably 75/25, and my reasons are - 1) typically, there are no mandolae in jams 2) my mandola has a rich, full sound, full of sustain, 3) having a little bit more finger...

Re: 3-Part Chris Thile Master Class online

As it turns out, I was 19 minutes late and still was early for the event. Also, I couldn't really watch it, so I listened to it first, then watched the video later. Same as Marcus, I'm not interested...

Re: Ellis, Pava, or Collings MT2

So, I've played all three extensively, and ended up getting a Pava A5. My rationale came as a result of a conversation with Paul Glasse. He observed that once I let go of insisting on an 'F', the...

    Re: Shawnee Creek Mandolin

Sorry to hear that. I talked to him extensively in 2010 about a build, but I ended up not going with him. He was a nice guy though. Godspeed!

Re: What is the "Must Have" Mandolin Book(s)?

The two books that really helped me (still do)....Parking Lot Picker’s Song Book (mandolin edition) and Jesper Rubner-Peterson’s Improvisation lick book. I’ve bought several books from Mel Bay’s site...
  8. Re: Wegen (bluegrass) picks without grip holes available?

I copied the hole pattern I liked, then drilled it into my proplec picks. That worked nicely for me!
  9. Re: BRIGHT STAR: musical by Steve Martin & Edie Brickell

My occasional band - Runaway Train - got to play a pre-show set at the regional performance last week. The "Bright Star" producers partnered with the CBA to have a different bluegrass or old time...

Re: Old Ellis F5 vs New Ellis F5

I do have a question for Ellis owners out there - what how many has he produced so far? I know that Pava is in the 300s now and was curious if Mr. Ellis cracked the 400 threshold yet.

Re: Old Ellis F5 vs New Ellis F5

I'm MarcusCA's mando buddy, and yes, the Ellis at Gryphon was stellar. Big, strong voice throughout, easy to play, perfect fit/finish. I also just bought Pava #262 from Sylvan Music two weeks ago....

  25. Re: What’s the hardest tune you can play on mandolin? (Or family)

I saw that someone put "8th of February" by John Reischman. I wrestled with that for years. I also have wrangled with "Song for Tom Morrow" by Vasen. Both of those are technically challenging songs...
