  1. The Guitars (and Mandolins) of Ken Burns' Country Music

Are you watching the PBS doc, Country Music? Come join a FB group dedicated to identifying the instruments shown (not just guitars, there are some interesting mandolins too). Lend a hand with ID,...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

Oh come on... you weren't really seriously thinking of having a luthier try and remove a layer of the finish on your very fine looking mandolin, were you? This is just the mental wanderings caused by...

    Re: Tonegards

It's true that the tone guard is not discussed as much in recent years here at the Cafe. I've thought that it's become pretty widely accepted as 'NOT a gimmick' but something exactly analogous to a...

    Re: Ricky Skaggs on NPR

I don't think that Marty plays a Loar. But someone else may be able to tell the story of his much-autographed mandolin!

This may be a slightly better image of Ricky's Big Mon replica. (perhaps...

    Re: Ricky Skaggs on NPR

Yes! That was one of a couple delightful moments on the PBS kickoff concert for the upcoming Ken Burns documentary season. A reproduction of Mon's mandolin for sure. Also, Marty Stuart took on a...

Re: Valuing a Gibson by Dr Lori

Well that was really painful. This is a version of the 'on the internet nobody knows you're a dog' problem. Nobody knows the depth of this appraiser's ignorance when it comes to musical instruments....

Re: Finally, a use for a banjo

I've lived in NYC for a long while - and I've never liked that statue, or the way it was 'installed'. But I still find the idea of a serious attack on a piece of art by a probably clinically insane...
  10. Re: Lyon and Healy Style C with planed fretboard

I do believe that there is a difference between seeking an original tailpiece, which would be purely cosmetic, and restoring the fingerboard to ebony, which will probably affect the sound,...
  11. Re: Lyon and Healy Style C with planed fretboard

I've often said that an L&H style C missing its tailpiece is the best value in vintage oval-hole mandolins. Headstock looks fine, but that fretboard is a puzzler, and the bridge is probably a...

    Re: Humidified Mandolin/Guitar Cabinet

This is a thread about humidifying a small closet or cabinet - NOT about room humidifiers, house humidifiers etc. Lots of other threads on that subject. But thanks anyway. :-)
  13. Re: Micing my Farmers Market/Retirement Home Bluegrass band

I don't know if there is an obvious alternative to either group mic-ing or individual mic mixing. But I'll say this for a single mic (or a single main mic and a solo instrumental mic) - if folks are...

    Re: Old Gibson

Now that you've posted your location, I'm sure that folks will advise on instrument shops qualified to fixer up! No reason to fear putting it shape, cleaning it up a bit and playing it. But probably...
  15. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Can someone condense the 'explanation' so I don't have to watch the video? This is the strangest thing ever...
  16. Re: Michael Daves - August Residency at Jalopy, Brooklyn, NY

Here's another new one that I just produced from the 2018 show with Chris Eldridge. Warning... no mandolin! But on a positive note... you don't often hear a vintage D-28 up against a plywood Kay...
  17. Re: Michael Daves - August Residency at Jalopy, Brooklyn, NY

...or if your tastes run more toward the Stanley Brothers - here's Clinch Mountain Backstep with Chris 'Critter' Eldridge on the old D-28.

Now Kay made a whole lot of these pressed top mandolins,...
  18. Michael Daves - August Residency at Jalopy, Brooklyn, NY

(This doesn't fit in any one genre category, so posting in General.) Here's one of a series of brand new videos that I'm producing for Michael Daves. He's promoting a residency: Sundays in August at...

  22. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Agree! Albert Shutt of Topeka, Kansas was essentially co-inventor (with Orville Gibson) of the 'American Mandolin' as distinct from its European ancestors. Carved, violin-style top and back plates...

A couple photos from his FB feed of the party thrown for him at the Opry. I thought the Cafe types might enjoy seeing this cake: a three-point w ff-holes!

  24. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Hopefully, the corporate might of Gibson will put an end to this commercial and its accompanying jingle. I'm not even sure that Kid can play guitar... ;-)

Re: Gibson “Black Night” at TMS

Nice review, Billy - and what looks like a nice mandolin. As for blacktops, if you play them enough, fingerprints become less of a concern. ;-)
