absolutely!
Got the mandolin back, and the FON looks like 11389 (but the first three numbers are struck out with a pencil, so it is a bit hard to tell), so it appears to be an early 1921 all around.
The A-Jr. is having a little bit of work done on it at the moment, so it is with a luthier. I do recall that the FON is faintly visible, although it has a pencil line drawn through it (strikeout.) ...
I'm actually not needing to know anything in particular. When I get an instrument, one of the things I usually do is track down the then-current catalog (or at least a copy, if the instrument is...
If I wanted to find the then-current catalog of a 1920 mandolin, that would have been catalog L, right?
Does anyone out there happen to have a pdf of this catalog? I've found the 1921 catalog M,...
I just purchased a Gibson A-Jr. that the seller listed as a 1920. For fun I picked up Spann's Guide, and, based on the serial number, he puts into 1921. My serial number is 626XX. Spann, page 191,...
I put the .016's on the Pava, and it did the trick. I love this strings with that one substitution.
Thanks all,
I just found a gently used TKL LTD, so I'll report back after receiving it. Hopefully it fits well.
5bassman,
I actually had to get the larger Tone-Gard ("Vintage-Gard") for...
For those of you out there that own a Pava or Ellis A-style mandolin: Do any of you store you mandolin with a Tone-Gard on it in a TKL Case ( either the Prestige:...
I use Martin Retros on my D-18 and 00-15 (mediums and lights respectively), and I love them on each of those guitars. So, a couple months ago, I picked up some of the Mangan Monel Mediums for the...
Done. Thanks!
I think that might be a remnant of last year's giveaway. That was what he did last year. This year seems to be a single mandolin given today. TMS just posted an ad in the classifies about it a few...
Has anyone figured out how to register to win the mandolin at TMS today? I've seen the ad for weeks, but I still cannot figure out how to register for it. Last year was simple--fill out a form that...
It looks to me to be a little knob or grip to grab for raising the lid. Unlatch the case, and open it by hooking that "foot" with your finger.
Thanks for the heads-up on the Newtone strings. I wasn't aware of them--somehow I missed them in my searching. FYI, the Newtone website identifies those as "Nickel plated steel Handwound over...
Keep in mind that GHS White Bronze are a Nickel-Iron String (iron added to mostly nickel, presumably to enhance the ability to use with a magnetic pickup), whereas Monel is copper and nickel
Hi David,
I know you are very in the loop on this stuff, so I'm curious about this comment. I had a dealer last week try to sell them to me as being monel "like the Martin Retro strings," so I...
Yes, there is safe way. For picks I wouldn't waste my time, but for instruments I would: you each purchase the other's item via PayPal. I buy your pick, you buy mine. The net is $0 (minus the fee...
I think #3 was Stiver.
I'm not sure on the first two, but I'll go with #1 as the Flatiron, and #2 as the Silverangel.
Almost as silly as manufacturing and packaging a string and then restricting everyone from selling it!
John,
I sure hope this is right! I did actually call Martin a week ago and asked them point blank if they had any plans to release a Retro/Monel mandolin string and was told "no." But I sure...
WINNER is #12. Ago, send me you mailing address, and I'll get them out the door to you.
Thanks all!
If the moderators could edit the title to indicate this, it would be great!
Hi Ivan,
This is helpful--thanks. I have one mandolin, and it's a Pava, which, as you probably know, was made in Tom's shop.
When I bought it, I A/B'd it with a number of other mandolins. ...
I have a few extra items that are not being used, so I'd like to offer these as a giveaway. Post if you are interested and at some point tomorrow, I'll randomly choose a number.
Shipped to CONUS...
