    Re: Mandolin to DADGAD

If you learn guitar in DADGAD, that’s how you’ll understand and approach guitar. Same would be true for standard tuning. I see no reason not to jump right into what you actuality want to do with...

A coworker of mine was there last week. He said there was live music and busking acts on Fremont but the clubs and venues were shut down.

Re: Autumn is for playing mandolin.

I have a few I do with vocals and mandolin - 'La Vie en Rose,' Chaplin's 'Smile,' the old nursery rhyme 'Lavenders Blue' come to mind. When vocals work with the mandolin, it works really well. When...

    Autumn is for playing mandolin.

I tried but mandolin never really became my primary instrument. I'm a guitar player at heart; I can never get too far away from singing songs with my acoustic guitar. But I still love my mandolin. ...

    Re: Eddie Van Halen RIP

For those interested, here is a lesser known acoustic side of EVH. I might have remembered this wrong, but it seems like in a guitar mag interview around the time VHIII came out, Ed said he owned...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I prefer the simplicity and think A-styles look better. YMMV.

    Re: Eddie Van Halen RIP

I don't disagree about George Harrison. EVH was the Harrison of the late 70s/80s. He got kids interested in playing guitar, like Harrison did before him. It always bothered me how Eddie sort of...

    Re: Eddie Van Halen RIP

I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Being an 80s kid, EVH was a big part of my life. Every boy in my generation at some point wanted to play guitar, and mostly because of Eddie. I...

It’s always fun watching this mandolin journey continue. I liked the Collings a lot but this Eastman seems nice too. Best wishes in your search, Kevin!

I want to read the Petty book at some point. Back in the summer I decided to go through Petty’s entire catalog from start to finish. Of course the hits were great, but I found some absolute gems...

I finally got around to this one. Read it via audiobook (the reader did a great job) and thoroughly enjoyed. What a crazy life, and what a mess Ira was, poor fellow. I enjoyed learning about...

    Re: Which Budget Fingerstyle Guitar?

This is the Golden Age of guitars. The options and quality are insane when compared to what was available in the past. I played a $130 Recording King Dirty 30 once that could have easily become a...

    Re: D'addario strings (Consistent breakage)

D’Addarios are the standard in the mandolin world for whatever reason, but there are a bunch of road-less-traveled brands. Trying them all out is part of the fun. I’ve pretty much tried them all...

Very good point. I’m not sure why this combination works so well for the tone I like but it does. Serendipity.

Re: My mandolin got eaten by a Stratocaster.

I like Fender amps but this Marshall is perfect for the sound I’m going for. I can get a 50s rock/blues tone with no pedals.
