Re: What is this wood figuring called?

That theme might tell us something about the attention to detail that Adrian and crew are paying to the quality of the wood they are sourcing (and pretty much every other aspect of production).

    Re: F2/F4 style mandolins?

Gretsch made the G9350 Park Avenue that occupied this end of the market for several years.

Re: NMD Sawchyn Hobo Flat top

I find the blurb interesting: “As compared to a Beavertail, the Hobo has a darker, deeper, warmer, and slightly lo-fi tone. It’s a fun solo instrument, with less projection and horsepower, but more...

Re: Ideas for a mandolin, $500-1,000

This old article is always worth a read:

    https://www.mandolincafe.com/news/publish/mandolins_001443.shtml

If i were shopping in the $500-$1000 range, I’d probably look for an old player’s grade...

    Re: Flatiron N1 vs K2

I would expect the 1N to be a bit brighter due to the maple back, the 2K to be a bit warmer because of the koa, and the latter to be a higher (2) trim level aesthetically with binding.

Re: Would you sacrifice tone for playability?

If the answer is framed generally about instruments, I’d say yes. Playability features such as neck profile, nut width, and fretboard radius are difficult/expensive to modify and a challenge for me...

    Re: Pava Satin v Pro

The great value is comparing them to dollars spent. Quality to Price Ratio. Bang for the buck. In the case of Pavas, they are Ellis shop instruments for a fraction of the cost of an Ellis branded...

    Re: Silverangel Econo A #446

My experience was similar. My Silverangel was a pleasure to pay in a quiet room but got a bit lost in the din of many instruments. My Collings could cut through the mix but was a bit shrill for solo...

  17. Re: Hypothetical high dollar mando purchase question...

It sounds like you’re saying that ~$20K instruments are better than less expensive ones and that they’re not.
  18. Re: Hypothetical high dollar mando purchase question...

Mary, I'm trying to follow the distinction that you're making here, but I'm struggling. It feels like you're saying that an instrument at $25K is different (not better) than $16K but one at $20 K is...

Re: Looking for a GOOD flat top mandolin

In my experience, the best bang for the buck was a Flatiron pancake which pumped out a lot of sound for its size. If you like that tone but prefer modern playability features (larger frets, radiused...

Re: Love the One Youíre With

There also seems to be a phenomenon in which our mind and ears recognize our mandolin as the sound a mandolin is supposed to make. It can take a while to reprogram, more than a trip to Elderly.

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

Would a plectrum guitar get you there? They’re not usually strung to cello tuning, but the scale length is usually in the ballpark.

    Re: I'm buying a Mandolin

The typical advice around here is that you should expect to pay twice the amount of your flattop guitar for the equivalent archtop mandolin.

Re: what is the best selling mandolin.

I can’t imagine that the “best selling” mandolin is in the $400 and above price range. I’d expect the answer to be something far less expensive, like a Rogue or something hanging on the wall of every...
