    FON 1917(??) Gibson A-0

I recently purchased what was advertised as a 1917 Gibson A-0. The label is badly faded and I really can't make out a serial number. There is what I assume is a factory order number stamped on the...
  3. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

Thanks, Doug. I actually plan to order a pickguard from you for a new mandolin that I'm having built, which probably won't be completed until at least early August, but first need to find out what...
  4. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

    Ok. Will do.
  5. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

Thanks for the tip on the screw size. I’m sure I’ll be able to make it work.
  6. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

The pickguard is for my Collings MT. I know that Collings mounts their pickguards with screws, so I got in touch with them and they said they will sell me the screws. That’s just what I wanted!
  7. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

Thanks, pops1. If I can find small enough screws, I feel confident that I can handle the installation ok. If I can’t find the screws, I’ll just go ahead with pins, as I have done in the past.
  8. Re: Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

Thanks, ajh. I have ordered a few pickguards from Hill Country, but the one I'm working with now is one I made myself. I just thought maybe I could buy some screws and mount it that way instead of...
  9. Screw-mounting a pickguard(instead of pins)

I plan to mount a pickguard on my Collings MT and would prefer to mount it using screws and inserts the way Collings does at the factory, instead of with the pins that came with the pickguard(from...

Need info on a Barcus-Berry pickup

    181208
I found a Barcus-Berry pickup in the storage compartment of a used mandolin case. I have no need for the pickup and plan to sell it, but have no idea how much to ask for it. If anyone out...
  13. Re: BlueChip folks -look at this pic and tell me which one to try

I have a Blue Chip TAD-60 and love it, but when I am at a jam outdoors somewhere, especially when it's in a dark place, I'm afraid to lose it. In those situations, I use a Dunlop Primetone, model...
  14. Re: Need a flat mandolin top(just the top to replace one)

    Rodney,
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. Now I'm rethinking the project and maybe I'll just repair the tops.
  15. Re: Need a flat mandolin top(just the top to replace one)

    Tavy,
The tops are really too badly sunken(as well as cracked) to be re-braced. Thanks for your help.
  16. Re: Need a flat mandolin top(just the top to replace one)

Thanks, Chuck. The more I read about building a flattop, the more I feel I can do it myself. I guess my main concern was getting the proper radius on the top, but I'm pretty sure I can figure it out...
  17. Re: Need a flat mandolin top(just the top to replace one)

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll read up on how to get the proper thickness and bracing and build the top myself.
  18. Need a flat mandolin top(just the top to replace one)

I have a flattop mandolin the needs a new top. I'm hoping to find someone who can build me one, hopefully for under $100. I am able to install it myself. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Supplements for dealing with finger pain?

After 30 years of playing(not as a pro), I developed "trigger finger" in my left index finger. It became so painful that eventually I could not continue playing. I tried supplements, stretching...

    Shipping to Hawaii

I've never shipped a mandolin to Hawaii from the 48 states, but I have someone from Hawaii interested in buying a mandolin that I have for sale and am looking for some feedback, good or bad, from...
  22. Re: Dressing frets on a compound radius board

Thanks so much to all of you have so generously offered your advice. I do have two radiused blocks, a 10" and a 12", which I bought from Stew-Mac several years ago. I'm not a pro, just a...
  23. Dressing frets on a compound radius board

I have a Collings MT and it's my understanding that the fingerboard has a compound radius. The frets are getting to the point where they will need to be dressed. I've dressed/leveled frets on...
  24. Re: Anyone familiar with 1930's Dobro mandolins?

    Bob,
Thanks for your input. As you may have read above, I have decided against buying the Dobro. I have actually had my hands on a few over the years and was never really happy with the action &...
  25. Re: Anyone familiar with 1930's Dobro mandolins?

Thanks to all for the input. Think I'll just stick to my National for now(probably forever, or at least until MAS hits me again).
    Have a great 2013!!
