    Re: Improvising

Wow …. You are on the right track. Ultimately improv is an effort to play what you hear in your head and to allow your brain and fingers to connect to the music without conscious thought. I often use...

In my most humble admission, the photo you refer to is not Tut. That is the author of the article, my much younger self, and I cannot explain what this is doing in the article. I have uploaded to the...
  4. Re: Article: The 1978 Bob Givens Interview from The Guitars Frien

Here is the interview elephantrock put together for Bluegrass Unlimited. Not sure if Bluegrass Unlimited will have issue with this but I'd think since those issues are no longer in print nor for sale...
  5. Re: Article: The 1978 Bob Givens Interview from The Guitars Frien

I may have published the last word on Bob Givens, a two part article that appeared in Bluegrass Unlimited, January and February 1992. Bob passed not long after that.

    During his last months of...

It starts with you thinking, all I want to do is a simple two or three track recording. Cheap and simple. Kind of like, I'm going to get this cheap mandolin to fool around on. You are happy. Then...

    Re: Mandolins "Opening Up"

The best way to search the Cafe is to not use the built in Search Function. It has limitations. It's actually better to search using Google. The syntax for the Google search would be:

    "Open up"...

Re: How an Instrument Shapes Our Playing

I've experienced it; if you are a sensitive player, the instrument changes how you play, sometimes immediately, sometimes over a period of years. I've had instruments that totally changed my playing...

    Love the One You’re With

Just got back from another excellent trip to Elderly Instruments in Lansing where I had a chance to play a ton of mandos. There was an Ellis, a Weber Fern and a Givens that really stood out.

  19. Re: What's the diff between Northfield NF5S and F5 models?

My point was that figuring in the wood has little to do with tone. When I bought my Arches kit, I just figured that the plainer backs and the more irregular tops went into the kit pile. After all, a...
  20. Re: What's the diff between Northfield NF5S and F5 models?

The northfield's are put in four categories these days.

NF5S is the basic model, and has binding only on the top, with a laquer finish.
They are great mandolins, and just have a bit less bling...
