    Gourd-backed mandolin

Coming up for auction in Bristol, England on 20th February is this oddity which looks like a bowl-back 12-string mandolin with a gourd for a bowl...

    Re: Curious Mandolin

I once bought a very fancy bowlback with no maker's label. I couldn't believe that anyone would make such a fancy instrument and not put his label in it. Then when I removed the tailpiece to give the...

    Re: Another carbon fiber question

    Absolutely.

Truss rods have more to do with action height on a guitar (which the OP is asking about) than on a mandolin, IMHO.

    Re: italian spruce

I don't think spruce grows in Italy very much. Traditionally, European spruce comes from the Carpathian mountains, well to the east and north of Italy. As I'm in Europe I use it all the time, though...

    Re: Another carbon fiber question

There will be others on here with more experience than me, but I have found that CF will never do the same job as a truss rod. You can't straighten a warped neck by gluing a CF rod into it. Even if...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Thanks Marty. Yes, it did take me a while to get used to that. At first I was just too close to the bridge, and it mattered. When I moved up to the soundhole it sounded OK across all the strings...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Thank you . . . I'm afraid I'm not a good enough player to do barre chords, but I suppose your finger would need to be roughly parallel to the frets. However if you're doing barre chords, you would...

Re: Is this old Washburn worth restoring?

I'd fix it up. I love that kind of job. Rescuing a venerable old mandolin from the brink of death. Doesn't need a new top, that one can be flattened. Wouldn't be worth paying a professional repairer...

    Re: very old mandolin

I always feel suspicious when I see a photo of a bowlback with the bridge saddle removed from the bridge. Usually it was taken out to compensate for high action (a very common problem). The fact that...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

It will take me a while to produce anything with this instrument which might be considered musical. When I have, I will post it on YouTube and put a link on here. In the meantime, here is a video of...

Marking string slot positions on nut and bridge saddle. I am using the spacing given by Sunburst in Post#166 of his thread.

    Re: Hi from a newbie.

    Welcome Mike . . .

If you want to make carved style mandolins, I think you'll find that the wood sold for making violins is about the right size (not sure about the sides though). Touchstone...

My bracing is much lighter than Joe Mendel put into the one he made for Walt (post #12 & 16). Walt put some pretty heavy strings on his. I will be using much lighter ones.

    Re: Warps in bent sides

Put a sturdy piece of wood against the strut on the inside, another on the outside, clamp it up tight. This is assuming the guitar is partly assembled and not in the mould.
