    Re: Lyon and Healy mandocellos

The claim that a carved L&H cello dates from 1915 is simply not credible. 1917 would be the absolute earliest. Your orchestra's lucky to have you using this instrument in the environment it was...
  2. Re: Tone and Volume pots on Harmony H35 Batwing

Heh. That pickup hole ain't anywhere near as big as the pickup itself. It might be big enough for a pot. Or you might find it necessary to remove the back in order to replace pots.

    Re: Spring Reverbarator---1901

I put these in all my instruments. They are very useful in discouraging players of spoons, harmonicas, kazoos, triangles, and diddleybows from wanting to jam with me.
  5. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

Sold for $699.99 ... not bad, all things considered. That is within the $500 to $750 range as I predicted.

But does that make me Statler, or Waldorf?

Re: You have never seen a mandolin like this

Also, the title says Evaluation and nobody talks about the mandolin's value. Grr. Get off my lawn.

Re: You have never seen a mandolin like this

Well, shucks, it's always nice to see & hear David Harvey talking about old Gibsons. But as for production value on the video — he shows the guys three photos and we don't get to see any of them.

  9. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

I had a chat here on the Cafe with someone who said he'd studied with Herschel Sizemore or some other big-name bluegrass mandolinist who played and taught strictly by ear. That person said something...
  10. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

Heh ... well, conventional western theory has its own language, and is just a particular way of interpreting and arranging sounds. You can play music without speaking that language.

    I got the...

Now down to $1500. This is kind of like a "Dutch auction," no?
  12. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

Yes, the label is wrong, but no, lower serial numbers are known to exist, including on A4s.

  13. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

I knew this guy, Sheamus O'Rork, who was studying composition at Cornish College of the Arts and directed our mandolin orchestra for a short time. Sheamus said his teachers told him that contemporary...
  14. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

Since I'm watching the auction, I received an offer to buy it for $1250, which is the high end of what it might be worth after repair/restoration.
  15. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

True, the original would be ivoroid, no?
  16. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

Yeah, seems a bit low unless you know a repair tech in a generous mood.

I'd love an old Gibson with a walnut back ... but not if it's in pieces.
  17. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

This instrument is now on eBay for $2495, which is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. It might be worth that if it were in perfect shape with the original tailpiece.

Re: African mandolin on fb marketplace

But it's possible that the mandolin does have roots in Africa. European chordophones can be traced back to the oud, which was imported to Europe from the Middle East and North Africa (the oud is...

The tenor guitar was invented in the 1920s. Whatever this is, it ain't that.

Re: Vintage K1 mandocello on GC

One reason to suspect it's been reworked is that it has back binding when it shouldn't. But yeah, it's conceivable that it's late '20s/early '30s with original neck and hardware.
