    Re: Aria Mandolin

I can't help with the mandolin identification, but my first guitar was a used Aria.
Bought it around 1980. Very good quality for the money. Plays easy sounds great. I still have it.

    I did...

Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

    Good advice.

I don't think this was mentioned: fiddles tend to be louder then mandolins.

Trying to play louder (for me) increases tension and reduces my speed, accuracy and fluidity.

    This...

Thanks for sharing that! I'd like to be able to play some stuff that most folks would know.

    Re: Non-mando question - singing

This may sound silly, but practice in the bathroom, or in a hallway, or facing the corner of a room. It will help you to hear yourself.

    Re: Rough Fret Edges

Thanks. I didn't have the dealer do a setup. I just bought it and ran :)

I think it's worth a try to reach out to Eastman.

    Rough Fret Edges

While on vacation in Florida (I live in Maryland), I bought a new Eastman MD-305.

It's a nice little instrument and I enjoy playing it

However, the edges of the fret-wires on the treble side...

    Re: Left hand technique

This is a really interesting concept. It's harder for me to do than I expected, but I'm going to work it in to my practice and see what results.

    Re: Ability to Jam

We all have good days and bad days.

For coming up with a break on the fly, the pentatonic scale is your friend. Learn it in a closed position, and in open positions for for the keys you...

Re: Playing with too much tension.

This is a very good point.

I think the tension can be related to one's competency with the piece and speed.

Re: Playing with too much tension.

This very timely for me. It's been on my mind a lot lately.

At practice I'm much more relaxed. At a gig, tension creeps in.

It's gotten a bit better, but I need to make a deliberate...

Re: Good free tuner Apps that work with mandolin?

I have gStrings as well, but just keep it for emergencies. These types of tuners are not useful in a jam or performance situation because they are distracted by ambient sound.

    I keep several of...

Re: Upper body exercise and finger speed

A very timely topic for me. Upper-body exercise seems to help my playing. Light wood splitting , yardwork, some push-ups. Overall my strength and coordination seems better.

Re: Tips and strategies for shifting

    Thank you.

I've been working on some of that double-stop shifting. It's a great tool for filling out breaks.

After viewing this I realize that the part I'm really struggling with is shifting...

    Tips and strategies for shifting

I've reviewed this thread on shifting vs position playing. It references the Sierra Hull video which shows a simple shifting technique.

    Performing in a sport coat

We had a new year's eve gig and at the last minute it was decided that we should "dress up".

I've never performed wearing a sport coat, and we didn't have an opportunity to practice in our...

Re: What is the story behind the "scroll"

Regarding the construction of the scroll. It could affect the tone.

I have a brand new MF, and the portion of the scroll that I can see through the F-hole is hollow.
