What is the name of the tune John Reischman is playing on the YouTube video (posted by Fretboard Journal) wherein he tells the story of how he came by his mandolin?

    Re: Culpeper Music Center

I live just down the road from Culpeper Music and echo the above comments and observations. Its a very friendly place and Bishop is truly a master luthier. He has worked on two of my mandolins; a...
  6. Re: Gilchrist Model 5 - how long to get it to open up?

If the J74 strings do not seem to do the trick try a set of DR-MD 11's. I recently acquired a 2014 Mowry F5 which arrived with a new set of J74's in place and was a bit put off by how bright and...
  7. Re: another very cool Sierra Hull video-After you've gone

    Sierra did attend Berklee.
  8. Re: What a difference a pick (the right one) makes !.

It's extraordinary how different instruments respond to different material or maybe how each of us has different touch and attack angles on strings to produce the longed for tone. When my Mowry F5...

    Re: Soloing - Bluegrass style

We're all on the same page. It takes a lot of time and patience. Slowing everything down is a must and here are some others

Re: Are Gilchrist's tuned to C#?

Dang, I wish I'd known all this before I paid for a Helmholtz upgrade.
  11. Re: Trip to Nashville today to look at mandolins

I used a CT55, a Dunlop Primetone rounded edge, and a TAD60. The CT55 and the Primetone were best by far.

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

Started working my way through the slow jam play list on the Monroe Mandolin Camp website. They are all great tunes and fun to work out.
  13. Re: Trip to Nashville today to look at mandolins

Mike, I was at Carter yesterday and agree with your evaluation of the 2006 Gilchrist. It was, to my ear at least, the best on the wall. I also believe the Altman's were right up there. However I was...

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

St. Anne's Reel. Just watched a youtube video of Joe Walsh at Joe Val festival playing this tune. What great phrasing and touch he has.

Re: Do you have a "Top Five" list?

The best ever played and the best to which we have easy access and can test drive are very different. The best ever played was JR's Loar, followed by Dudenbostel's #1 F5. The best I''ve played to...

Re: Which case should I take

A travelite in the overhead works fine and you will be glad for the lighter load when you get to Swannanoa. You will wear typical summer duds during the day but you may need a light (rain) jacket for...

Re: Northfield Big Mon Honey Tortoise

Thanks. The photo does not do it justice. Better photos can be seen on Andrew's website. This mandolin is pictured in his gallery of F5's, fourth row from the top. At the request of the previous...

Re: Northfield Big Mon Honey Tortoise

This theme seems to be consistent with many of us. It has been difficult for me to put down my new (to me) Mowry F5 since receiving it last week. Maybe the increased practice time has improved...

    Re: Considering a Mowry

It was 9 days ago that I opened this thread and I am delighted to say I am now the proud owner of Mowry #100. It is an absolutely beautiful F5 blonde with white binding gold appointments and EVO...
  22. Re: What's your favorite album to play along with?

Adam Steffey's "New Primitive", John Reischman's "Walk Along John", Mark Johnson and Emory Lester "1863", anything by Grisman and Garcia, Don Steirnberg "Swing 220"....the list goes on.

Re: One tip that changed everything

Alternating up and down pick strokes is pretty important. The Monroe style being something of an exception.

    Considering a Mowry

In the ongoing search for great sound coupled with top drawer aesthetics I find myself captivated by the work of Andrew Mowry. I've been looking for a used Mowry F5 for quite a while and there are...
  25. Re: Case big enough for Northfield F5S and Tone Gard?

I have a Northfield F5S with a Tone Gard as well and the Travelite case works great. It will be snug at first but loosens to a very good fit in no time. I am very satisfied with this arrangement.
