    Re: Playing Solo..

During the Ken Burns specual Country Music: Live at the Ryman, Marty Stuart did a jaw-dropping vocal/mandolin solo of Johnny Cash's Orange Blossom Special.

Re: Your Thoughts On D'Addario XT Strings

I've used EXP74 for two years. I'm trying a set of XTs now. They sound a little different but I like them.

    Re: Point of Diminishing Returns

Be aware of any tension in your hands and arms while you're playing. If you are tensing up then you're getting tired. For me, tension prevents me from playing well.

Re: $200 to spend on a new or used Mandolin

An Ibanez M510-DVS retails for less than $200. All of the instrument, except the neck, is laminated but with silk and steel strings, a thick pick and a good set up, it's very playable and it doesn't...

Re: Micing mandolins for recording purposes...

After the holidays, I'm going to try an AT 2020. Does anyone have experience with this mic?
  7. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

When I step on the plane, I ask the attendant if they can store my mandolin in their crew locker. More often than not , they've done that for me; otherwise I've stored it in the overhead. I've only...

  9. Intervals/Scale Ricky Skagg's Breaks on J.D. Crowe & the New Sout

I hear Ricky playing scales during his breaks that sound like 3rd intervals. Could someone explain what he's playing? Thanking y'all in advance.

    Re: The Kentucky

The finish on my KM956 is very thin. I'm sure this helps the tone and volume. The very thin finish is one of the reasons I had a custom pick guard made for it.

    Re: The Kentucky

The same Steve Hartz. In a few short hours I'll be making music with him. I think the KM150 sounds good and the one I've seen has a really nice dark sunburst finish.

    Re: The Kentucky

I have a KM-956, which is the same instrument as the 950 but with a different color; a deep reddish brown. I bought this A model so I could get a bluegrass instrument without paying an additional...

    Re: No more EXP74's?

I've been using EXPs for a couple of years. I'm looking forward to trying the set of XTs I ordered last night. I still use Monel on my old A2 but prefer the coated phosphorus bronze on my KM956.

    Re: F2/F4 style mandolins?

I've never seen that Breedlove model. I could handle the less than traditional look if it plays well and sounds good.
  15. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

The Fiddlin' Powers Family first recorded in 1924 with Orpha Powers on mandolin. The young lady had some chops on the mandolin.

    Re: What's In Your Mind

I try to be aware of any tension or strain in either hand or arm and make being relaxed when I play, a priorty over playing the best or even the correct note.

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

I apologize. I was mistaken about the specific D'addario strings I've been using. The set that I'm satisfied with is not the XT but the EXP74. Sorry about my confusion. The EXP74 have been the both...

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

D'addario says it is a different steel core. Regular pb strings have always been difficult for me to fine tune after a couple of weeks. I play these XTs for 3 - 4 months before they get cranky about...

    Re: Increasing Scale Exercise Speed

An interesting question, Sherry. I guess I never practice scales with all quarter notes. My default is to play scales with eighth notes, alternating my pick direction. Now I'm curious. The next time...

    Re: Silk and Steel Strings?

I put a set of s&s on my Ibanez "beater" and it fattened the sound. I tried a 3.0mm Primetone pick instead of my usual 1.3 mm and it fattened the sound even more.

There's a large medical community in Durham/Chapel Hill NC (Duke and UNC) and a whole lot of acoustic music happening on most every day of the week, year-round.
