Thanks for the photos. Very nice looking mandolin, and I certainly enjoy maple bowls...
The action looks to be in quite playable condition.
The thickness of the new fretboard makes me wonder...
We can safely narrow this down to Sicily.

I’ll second Bob’s recommendation for the Calace Dolces. I use them on my bowlbacks and flatbacks.
And even have a set of the Medios on my Gibson now. (David is probably rolling his eyes…)
...
I agree with Nick.
This is certainly pre-war, and certainly not 'factory made' but likely from a small(ish) shop that produced a lot of MOR mandolins for export to England, France, Germany etc and...
Lots of violin music tradition in Mexico.
The Texas Fiddle Festival has had huapango / huastecan fiddle playing for some years now.
Much of what we Texans love about Texas music is a hybrid of...
An interesting discssion...
I realize it's out of date range for the primary comparisons, but fwiw, my 1951 Martin A is 9.5 W and 3.0 D.

Thanks, David, Martin, Simon, Dagger...and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone..
It seems we're once again converging on some of the same great music.
I think I've let on that I've been slipsliding...
John, I was following (or trying to follow) this discussion in another thread where some research papers were testing the sound characteristics of a bowlback.
You've summarized the summaries nicely....
Thanks, J.
That's a great resource.
Not sure how deep I want to go, but I'd like to go deeper than I am now.
i enjoy the Frenchified box and fiddle music.
Mick
Thank you, sir.
I picked up a DG box last year and in the book examples it looked like a number of tunes in those keys. Was that your experience?
I'd be interested in learning more music from...
Here's a link to the CD that Jim mentioned in his post.
At least it goes by the same name.

A few nice nuggets of information from the site Mike linked to, filling in a bit more on the 20s scene in Chicago, particularly JR Stewart:

Well, you could swap out the light gauge strings for some heavier ones and watch your Washburn implode on you while you're fiddling with your strap attachment.

My (limited) experience with Ditson labeled mandolins has been that they've been good to very good instruments hopefully reflective of the company's good taste / good sense of working with outside...
I look forward to seeing your Martin / Ditson when you have a chance to post some pictures.
Our long-lost friend Jake Wildwood has images of a Ditson labeled Martin with their "B" style...
Fair play to you.
You'd think all the lost mandolins would have turned up found by now, but these kinds of serendipitous stories come up here on a more-than-occasional basis and always make me...
Great stuff, John and Bruce. Thanks for sharing.
Where's Martin?
We can't have a discussion here about Ceccherinis without Martin joining in. :)

Thanks, John and Bren...great tales.

Thank you, John, for the music and video.
And now I know what a bothy is. True delights for the architect in me.

Thanks!
I dig the Waldo, front and center.

I've got a half dozen or more of these "Leland" model flatbacks with a few different labels, including one from Wurlitzer.
I've long been of the opinion that these were made by Vega.
Others...
Might be time to get a bowlback mandolin to help break your folks out of stereotypes of what a mandolin looks like, sounds like or plays like.
And I'll bet you'll enjoy it yourself!
Mick
Thanks, Nick....but alas I won't be bidding on this one.
Shipping costs from the UK to the USA have been exceedingly high and tend to scare me off from bidding on the many many interesting...
